How Twin Turbos Work - All The Boost!

preview_player
Показать описание
Twin turbocharger engines. How twin turbochargers work. There are several ways for an engine to incorporate twin turbos. In parallel twin turbos, the turbos are split between the cylinders, typically with V-shaped engines with each cylinder bank having it's own turbo. In sequential twin turbos, one turbo will be active at low RPM while both turbos will be active at high RPM. Some twin turbos incorporate different size turbos, which will not be discussed in this video.

Please compare the advantages, disadvantages and general qualities of each of these 3 forms of turbo charging (after the next video). Thanks.

I know all the auto basics already from being a tech for a few years, but I still enjoy watching your videos when I'm bored at work! Keep up the good work!

Pretty awesome. I always wondered how twin turbos worked.  Thanks for the simple explanation.  Keep up the great work!

My native language is not english but this simple explanation is the best under 5 mins, and even I understood the whole thing how its working. :)

This video has a couple incorrect information. Just shedding some light.
-In order to run twin parallel on a V Engine, there must be 2 throttle bodies, and the air induced by one turbo is to feed air to the opposite side cylinders. The crossing over maintains a balance for both turbos, preventing half an engine from overpowering the other half. For examples, see engines for Z32 300ZX & R35 GTR.
-Twin Sequential does not have 2 turbos within the same manifold. All exhaust goes into turbo #1 and then the turbine exhaust (excluding exhaust lost by wastegate) goes into turbo#2 which will kick in at a later time. For examples, see engines for MK4 Supra & FD RX7.

Someone mentioned earlier that RX7 and Supra are twin parallel, this is not correct, they are in fact sequential.

Love the channel man

you have just helped me figure out how sequential turbos work on 4 cylinder. sweet diagram and explanation process.

Awesome video! One thing I don't get though is how having a bypass valve on the intake side of the "higher RPM" turbo stops the exhaust from going through this turbo. Like how do the exhaust gasses know to avoid this turbo when the bypass valve is closed?

Is there a video on how turbo surge occurs and how to prevent it?
If there isn't can you make one? I've seen a few cases of turbo surge which is very unhealthy and damaging but I don't know how it can occur and how to prevent it.. You explain things the best.. Mind if you do a video on that topic?

Will it increase mileage if you don't want a power boost like in fords setup

Please explain dual-charger (turbo + Super charge on same engine) and Variable-geometry turbocharger.
What are their pros and cons?

Also please cover all-motor vs force induction.

Thanks. I was wondering how one filter can work on a twin turbo vehicle. I also like to hear you explained it. Thanks for all your videos

My name is Alex and I know someone, along some line of these turbo changing videos you are making, is going to ask about hybrid turbocharging. If you decide to make a video explaining hybrid turbo changers I would be more then happy to give you some of the research and calculations I have made for hybrid turbo charging as apart of my high school senior project. My project is still in theoretical stage because of lack of funding but is looking very promising.
Thank you for your time

Engineering Explained Could you please cover compound turbo setups?  There seems to a lot of debate about their setup and performance use in gasoline engines. I'd love to hear your take on them and about how compounded pressure ratios affect performance.
