Probiotic supplements have been marketed as a way to keep your gut healthy. But studies have found some probiotics may not be helping with gut health in the way people think. Anahad O'Connor, a columnist for The Washington Post's Well+Being section, shares his reporting with CBS News.

I'm so sick and tired of all the conflictive information.

No sources cited, no specific strains or species mentioned. No REAL information has been provided. GREAT JOB.

If I have stomach pain from antibiotic medication or something I ate, probiotics help tremendously.

So, let's see the peer reviewed studies. What do you mean by "research??" Talk to your doctor about the brand of probiotics? Talk to your doctor about your diet? Most doctors have little to no training in this first of all, and secondly, they have maybe 15 minutes every six months for you...

The fact that he’s a columnist and not a doctor tells me everything I need to know

There's a lot of things that can harm you most of which you try and hush up, probiotics are the least of our worries

You guys have a bad habit of publicizing "New Studies" before those studies have met peer review. Until they have passed the peer review process, they are theories at best.

You are not doing your viewers a service by doing this. In fact, you're doing them a great disservice.

First, he’s a columnist not a medical professional. Though He may know how to read reviews and journals. . Second, I’m learning about fermented foods and how high ones are not good for IBS individuals. They are not for everyone.

This way too vague. There are different probiotics, and pre-biotics and some are much higher quality than others. So just come out and say that probiotics now are shown in Studies to be harmful, is not enough detail to prove the fact. Exactly which probiotics were used in these studies? Were there pre-biotics involved? So many questions.

And of course once again no list of studies with links to them. Great reporting.... NOT!

Media says it's bad for you, most likely the opposite. Probably cures everything 😅

There's different types of probiotics, it would be more helpful if they were specific about the strains.

Also, studies have shown that The food we eat today is not at all the same quality of nutrients, because back in the day of growing it in your own garden. Most of the produce and meat we buy in the grocery stores, do not give us the sufficient amount of nutrients we need, and supplements are absolutely needed to offset that lack of it being in the food we eat. If you do take a good probiotic you will need to eat so many containers of yogurt to even measure up to what a good probiotic can do. I know that sounds like my opinion but I’ve seen studies showing this and as far as I see it’s a scientific fact.

If we go by what you just said, at trials test subjects given antibiotics AND THEN given probiotics.... you're supposed to have them at least two weeks prior, not after...🤦🏽‍♀️ Honestly, do not believe this crap they are telling you. Take a good branded supplement and pay attention to the fillers and ingredients. If you have gastritis or pancreatitis, problems with bloating, they will help you if you can tolerate them. Supplement this with healthy gut biome foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurts containing good bacteria 🦠...it all helps. I'll tell you something about the medical industry, you won't find many Drs out there helping you with choosing a pre or probiotic, that's because it doesn't help them and they don't know enough about it. If this study they mention here is how they describe it, then instantly this is flawed, would love to Review the study myself.

How about you list the specific studies somewhere that we can see the dichotomy ourselves?

Just a little friendly reminder to start with changing your diet versus going straight for a supplement.

The comments give me hope for humanity--so much resistance against the so-called "news." Warms me heart, it does. 🙂

What they're trying to say is that taking too much of a particular strain will ruin the bioDIVERSITY in your gut. So they're generally beneficial, but only if taken in moderation. Don't overdose!

And your body is exceedingly good at recovering itself. Don't overdo the probiotics when recovering from antibiotics. I've made that mistake with yoghurt and it gave me crazy bad stomach issues. Glad to say my body's recovered now 😊

I’ve had a really sore throat for a month. Doctor put me on me on steroids, antibiotics, nothing worked. He told me to see an ENT adap. Then I remembered I’d been taking a best selling probiotic for a month. Insane. It was literally killing me I was getting sicker and sicker as days went on. Will never touch that stuff again ugh.

Media Prostitutes are paid very well. But I totally agree about those specific foods. They partially redeemed. Themselves.
