This is not always true. Generally, two-way mirrors will NOT have a gap between what's put up against it (like a fingernail) but not always. There are products that act like regular mirrors. The best way it to turn on your cell phone light, put the phone up to the mirror, and turn off your light. If you can see something on the other side, they you have a two-way mirror.

The reflective part of a mirror is on the back of the glass. Hence the gap. There is no magic to a two way mirror. It's just as reflective on either side. It works because one room is really dark and the other really bright. If you turn the lights off, and put a flashlight up to the mirror you will illuminate the other room, rendering the occupants visible. Marker does not work.

This mirror is obviously ok. The mirror coating is on the back of the glass vs. On two way its on the front so you get no double line.

Beter method is using a flashlight and shine it very close to the mirror. If you see things reflecting in the back, then you have a two way mirror.

Turn on your phone camera and put it up to the two way and if it’s real your camera can see through it but if it’s not then it won’t

it's also easier to look at the mirror through your phone camera to look for ir lights

Easier way is to shut the light off and shine the light from your flashlight on your phone on it
