That's the kind of fire that we always had at Camp Sankanak. Remember Mr. Roy Lowry telling us stories while we watched the fire crackling? Aaawsome! He reminds me so much of Gunnery Sergeant Cook, my Chief Drill Instructor at Parris Island. I can go on if you want. Remember that day when a boy went missing at Camp Sankanak? They even started dragging the creek. He showed up at the only place they hadn't looked, in the Whitehouse (the bathroom). He hadn't drowned or died or even gotten lost on the woods. Just bad constipation. And do you remember the great Kanaknas initiation ceremony? Another fire. We all sat on the grassy slope down to the canoe launch. The drum beat ominously, anticipatingly. Slowly, from around the bend in the creek (the same creek where that little boy had not drowned, remember?) the canoes came into view and beached at the island. The drum stopped. The canoeists were dressed as Native Americans. Only that's not what they were called in the 50's. And then, on the far side of the fire on the island, there was Mr. Roy. Brings back memories. But you probably have other things to be doing. Write if you get work.
