My grandfather taught me this as a kid. I remember stopping at DQ after a weekend in the woods, just me and him fishing and such. Seeing this video brought up a good memory that I had completely forgotten about. Appreciate ya.

The reason why you get the ridges is because you are holding the striker at the wrong angle on the fero rod, its a common mistake a lot of people make, hold the striker or knife in thsi case at a 45 degree angle otherwise the striker will chatter along the fero rod gouging it as it bounces up and down, ridges can easily be fixed by scraping material off them flattening the rod.

Also you only want to use an inch or two from the tip which will also drastically reduce the chances of you getting ridges on your fero rod.

I use a 6 inch by half an inch thick fero rodnwith gorrila tape at the handle to not only insulate my hand in colder weather but also it can be torn/cut into thin strips that will catch a spark due to the exposed fibers in the duct tape, the tape can also be used for first aid for improvised wound closure or repairs and cordage making

Put your ferro rod tip on the surface and pump your scraper! You’ll get way more sparks!

In the field :
Use the designated striker.. Simple.. 🙄 Lasts longer, and 100% safe..
Don't want to get cut/injured while far away from medic/hospital.

I used the back of my saw this past weekend to start up the firepit, it worked wonderfully, thank you Jason, happy new years everyone

That's a good tip. For even more sparks try a piece of tungsten carbide or zirconia ceramic. Especially useful if you have arthritis.

Those ridges form in the same way that a gravel road forms a washboard effect as vehicles drive over it. It’s due to a rhythmic bouncing while scraping or rolling over the surface in a repeated fashion, wearing down the same spots while leaving ridges in others.

I just filed the spine of my S.S. Morakniv, flat. So now it works with my ferro rod. So this tip is good to know!

There’s a guy who says that there’s a better way and at first I was skeptical about it but after contemplating the process I realized that he was right. I will find the video and share it with you here. He avoids any ridges by focusing small downward pressure on the tip which eventually causes a V notch near the tip of the ferro rod.

Nice fixed blade and sheath I have one very similar

I always keep the ferro rod still and run the knife, you get a lot more stability and a hell of a spark from it

notice the difference between the overhand kinda throws the spark and the 'lawn mower pull method' keeps the sparks more localized. something i learned a while back. pulling the rod vs striking it makes a difference in where the sparks go.

I've always like the "overhand" method.

I've also found it to be effective to use a file (gently) to smooth down the ridges.
