A lot of my professors use this sort of method, but I never liked it cause it feels like cheating to me in that its more of a memorization of patterns than it is actual math. And whenever a professor of mine tries to explain it to me, I just end up completely lost.

I always swear by grouping when it comes to factoring. It's easy enough to do in your head, provided the numbers aren't ridiculous.

1. Take the leading coefficient and multiply it by the trailing number (the one without a variable)
In the video's example, we would do 2 (the leading coefficient) * 2 (the trailing number) = 4.

2. Figure out which two factors of that product will add to the center coefficient.
In the video's example, +5 is the center coefficient. Which two factors of 4 will add to +5? Well, that would 4 and 1. 4 * 1 = 4 and 4 + 1 = 5

3. Swap out the center value for the two factors you selected.
In the video's example, + 5x is the center value. We replace that with + 4x + 1x. This makes the equation 2x^2 + 4x + 1x + 2 = 0.

4. Group that into two separate expressions.
We have 2x^2 + 4x + x + 2. Group that into (2x^2 + 4x) (+x + 2)

5. Factor the two expressions such that each group ends up as the same factor.
We have (2x^2 + 4x) (+x + 2). Factoring the first group we get 2x(x+2), The second group we get 1(x+2). [Notice that (x+2) is the same in both groups]

Finally, take the coefficient of each group and combine them into one factor. And then take expression in the parenthesis as the other factor.
So our factors are 2x(x+2) and 1(x+2). Therefore our factors for our original trinomial would be the coefficients of each factor along with the factor in the parenthesis. So (2x+1) {coefficients} and (x+2)

That looks like a lot of steps, but I broke it down into detail. After you do it a couple times, its very easy to do in your head or quickly on paper if the numbers are too much for you to think about.

Could you offer clarification on your statement at the beginning about all trinomials can be factored into two binomials? My initial reaction was to say not all trinomials can be factored but you could be talking about factoring over the a different system of numbers.
