An early Christian evangelist named Marcion made one of the first New Testament canons ever. It was very different from the New Testament we know today.

Seeing as god was happy to destroy almost everything living thing on the planet because of a mistake he foresaw, I can fully believe there was a book that portrayed god as evil.

Could we...get a long form video of this please? Like, there's so much to unpack there and I want to really know... _everything_ youre motoring through. And not forget as rapidly as you're speaking.

Oh man that's fascinating. It actually makes way more sense than the alternative Christian canon.

It's hard to imagine somebody can stay in faith after learning about their religion history and how it changed and evolved during millennia.

Slap the word Canon on anything and that immediately implies fanfic

Very interesting! I love when you talk about Bible history and how it was put together, as well as the early centuries after Christ's death, with all the warring factions and disagreements, as the church structure came to power. Can anyone recommend a good read/channel/source for learning more about the centuries immediately after Jesus was executed? Also, although I'm not Christian, I've been toying with reading the Bible entirely. Are there any secular/non-Christian reading groups out there? Every read-along I find online is led by a specific pastor or church with a specific political/religious agenda, and I'd really prefer to read it in a more historical, factual context, working outside the framework of Christianity so I can appraise it more objectively.

Wild stuff! What do we call followers of Marcion Christianity? What happened to them?

Considering the number of times God has canonically destroyed entire civilizations because of a group of people, it wouldn't be surprising that he got portrayed in such a way.

No surviving copies hmm that sounds like a conspiracy

I don't understand people who read the Bible and don't see God as the evil character. Just because his actions are praised in the book, you can't see them for what they are? Genocide, torture manipulation. Not even talking about the fact that he always knows the outcome, whatever he does, so he purposely does things that he knows will lead to suffering.

This reminds me of the Gospel of Judas. I think a short about that book would be very interesting to people that are less deep in this topic

Tbh, idk if God exists or not, but reading these religious texts can really tell you a lot about the life and mentality of people who lived in the past. That's so fascinating.

This is full of Gnosticism. Especially when you read the Bible and it says that Jesus WAS/IS the same God of the Old Testament.

as an agnostic leaning misotheist, seeing early examples of people seeing god as evil is validating

Makes me wonder, was the Serpent actually the good guy (within the context of theology). I always thought that that idea was more compelling than the stories they teach in churches today. Also, makes me wonder if all godly encounters in the OT would be of the bad one or if their is some mixing of the two.

But that's just a theory of course.

I thought God was the evil one in all of the Bibles.
