Very thorough explanation. Doing all three in one swatch was a genius way of showing it. I wasn't really getting the garter having 2 rows in each ridge but then you pulled it and it all became crystal clear.

Technically, long tail cast on as well as many of the others are considered the 1st row of knitting. However, the majority of patterns out there do not treat it as such and will usually tell you to cast on, then go onto row 1. Does that answer your question?
