PIERCINGS VS. MAGNETS! Annoying questions pierced people get! Answering the most asked question do magnets attract piercings. No piercings are not affected by magnets! It would be a total nightmare if piercings were magnetic! This is almost as bad as people saying OH AIRPORT SECURITY MUST LOVE YOU just because you have a lot of piercings!

The "are you stupid" face is brilliant

The amount of people who think metal always means magnetic is too damn high.

Thank you for disproving this. Roly always doing his best for us

They didn’t actually say it was the magnet that would hurt you. Maybe they had some grand plan to drop a giant magnet on you, like a piano in an old cartoon

I love that you went with a big ass cartoon magnet 😂 brilliant

I could've sworn we learned in school that not all metals are magnetic. How do they think this is a 'gotcha' moment?

There is one, and only one, kind of magnet that would affect metal piercings that are not magnetic:
An MRI magnet, or other electromagnet made from a superconductor.
And even then, either it or you would have to be in motion for it to do anything.

So, Quick Science Lesson: You know that "Meter" is a unit of length, and "Watts" is a unit of power. But there's also a unit of magnetic field-strength: "Teslas", abbreviated to 'T'. An MRI magnet is about 1T-3T. The magnet you're holding, Roly, is about 1-10 _milliT._

Now, when metal _that isn't magnetic_ moves through a strong magnetic field — like in between the poles of a 1T+ magnet — that magnetic field will generate what are known as "Eddy Currents", which causes the metal to _slow_ down. Conversely, if you have an oscillating magnetic field of 1T or larger [like in an MRI], that will also generate Eddy Currents in any nonmagnetic metals, which will have the effect of tugging on that metal.

More technical: An "Eddy Current" is a sort of "magnetic-mirror" created by the fact that "changing magnetic field" == "current". So when your metal object is moving between the poles of that 1T magnet, that generates an electric current in the metal, just by moving around the electrons in it. But, if you have electrons moving, _that_ creates a magnetic field. So now, your non-magnetic metal object moving between the poles of that 1T+ magnet has an electric current created in it which, in turn, creates a magnetic field … one _in the opposite direction to_ the one of the 1T+ magnet. So now, you basically have a magnet-inside-a-magnet, which will slow down as it moves.

It's a neat trick shown in any university physics dept. that has access to an old MRI permanent magnet. They'll set it up with like a 1-5cm gap between the poles of the magnet, then take a 0.5-1cm thick copper or aluminium plate, put the plate between the poles, then drop it. The plate will sllloooowwwwly fall until it's no longer between the magnet poles, when it will drop down crashing to the floor at the speed you'd usually expect from dropping a chunk of metal.

The audio choice makes this even better lmao

OMG TY EXACTLY!! I HATE the “Hehe well one magnet and I win the fight” argument!! ITS NOT MAGNETIC. PIERCING JEWELRY (If good quality) IS NOT MAGNETIC.

It's almost as if they're specifically made of non-magnetic materials 😮😮
Honestly some people are well and truly bottom of the barrel dumb 😂

The people who think piercings are magnetic are the same people who think getting a vaccine will make you magnetic 💀😭

i apologize if this is really weird of me but you have the prettiest eyelashes ever. or maybe it's your eye shape, but I do know that it isn't just the stunning contacts making your eyes so beautiful. all around such a gorgeous person inside and out

There's a VERY good reason why piercings are not magnetic.

*Exactly.* Used to get this from bus drivers when i was younger - Titanium is *not* magnetic lol

Roly rubbing a magnet on his face while maintaining unblinking eye contact feels like some weird performance art that I was not ready for 😂

Can you disprove airport metal detectors next lmao. It's a good damn thing piercings aren't magnetic, could you imagine?

If it's titanium or surgical steel, it really shouldn't be magnetic. They use these metals in surgery for a reason. Could you imagine someone with a hip replacement having it shift or move every time they passed something magnetic? Fridge magnets sticking like tattoos 😂
