Prediction: The first colony will lose contact with earth. A rescue/supply mission will be sent, but they will find no one and no bodies. Carved into a support beam will be the word "Croatoan." There will be another huge mystery and it will be the topic of AHS Season 21.

There's this old Far Side comic about the Hubble Telescope that I never got and it has bothered me for years. Mentioning the Hubble screw up in this video finally helped me figure it out. Thanks, TopTenz! =D

Space holds a literal limitless supply of every non-organic compound, and enough carbon to make our own. Strip mining an asteroid doesn't kill a forest with toxic runoff, and the single best fusion fuel literally falls from the sky on the moon, providing a basically endless renewable supply, energy crisis solved for the price of a moon combine and a reentry proof shipping tank.

Damn it - why does no one mention the fact that any atmosphere we try to create on mars will be lost due to the Red Planet's lack of a magnetic field? The only reason solar wind doesn't peel our own atmosphere away like the thin skin of a clementine is Earth's powerful magnetic field, which Mars does not have. This seems like a MAJOR hurdle and no one even mentions it.

"Will definitely happen in your lifetime" probably depends on how old you are already. We might well get humans there within the next couple of decades, but full-blown colonies will probably take a little longer. Great episode though.

The journey from Earth to Mars takes 1 to 6 minutes depending on the position of the planets and the speed your ship is cruising at

to me it is exciting that people are getting interested in space again. I never understood why we stopped mostly after landing one the moon.

To call the race to the moon a waste of money that only resulted in "prestige" completely misses the mark. The Apollo program's challenges greatly accelerated our advancement of technology, and the truth is, without Apollo, none of us would probably be able to even view this video on YouTube here in 2017. Going to the moon has paid for itself many times over.

eventually we can divert asteroids and comets and bombard the surface of Mars to create a greenhouse effect

I want to buy land on Mars now. It's probably cheap as hell, and my descendants could rule a kingdom I bought for nothing

The concept of colonizing Mars leads to so many practical questions. A simple complication is just how would we adjust for days, hours, minutes? The people who live there couldn't use Earth time as the rotations are just too different between the worlds. Now construction on Mars is pretty much solved as oversized 3D printers would be used using the material from Mars surface, but what would be used as a bonding agent? While a lot can be carried from Earth it is truly a finite supply so the generation of foodstuffs is of immediate need while growing things on Mars is theoretically possible microbes are needed to sustain that growth which Mars has none that we know of.

Just a few questions.
