The surprise microphone is basically a character in the Daniel Thrasher universe at this point.

"What are some signs you're conventionally ugly?"

I had never been hit on, flirted with, or cat-called until 2020 when masks were required basically everywhere. Apparently I have really pretty eyes that are "ruined" by the lower half of my face lol.

But seriously, this is a very loaded question since people are inundated with beautiful faces online, many of which are highly deceptive due to makeup and editing (including men). I'm positive that I'm just very average looking and had zero confidence before. Once I got out of the school environment and felt safer to experiment with how I express myself, I started dressing nicer, spoke a lot more, and gained a lot more confidence in a short span of time. At the time, I had assumed the change in others' attitudes was because of the mask, but as the mandates were slowly lifted, the occasional flirting still happened.

Be kind to yourself, and people will notice your genuine demeanor.

People absolutely treat you better if you're attractive. I was chubby as a kid, then got cancer when I was a teenager which made me skinny af and I really noticed that people just wanted to be around me more.
Side note to maybe help cheer up this topic: I read a study once that concluded that the biggest factors in overall attractiveness wasn't genetic, but stuff like a good haircut, physique and a positive attitude, basically the stuff you can control help your attractiveness more than stuff out of your control.

I got on the elevator at work & there was an attractive woman inside who asked me “which floor?” to which I instinctively said, “4” & with almost no hesitation & the conviction of a Baptist preacher, she replied, “yeah, you look like you’re about a 4” & I just kind of stood there wide eyed, desperately hoping she was only going to the 2nd floor.
I am happily married so I’m not looking to impress anybody but I have to admit it was pretty devastation to my self-esteem. I expected that behavior in high school but I’m in my 40’s now, so to hear someone be so blunt was jarring.

7:20 My dad always said that the perfect movie for this criteria is WALL-E. There's not much dialogue to begin with, and it's visually stunning. After he pointed this out I would sometimes watch it with the TV muted for fun and give my own ridiculous narration.

obligatory Avatar fan comment: they don’t have sex with their hair. The hair thing (called tsaheylu) is a neural link, like connecting two brains through a biological USB. it _can_ be used in a sexual context but isn’t _inherently_ so. They reproduce the same way humans do (as far as we know).

I was reminded of a John Green TikTok where he reminiscened how in the most lucrative movie in the world, where they had a nearly infinite budget ... where they sent the characters to a planet far away to mine a really hard to obtain mineral they need... and named it "unoptanium" ... and the disbelief in John Green's face is still stuck in my head XD

3:54 "Your mother was a broken down tub of junk with more gentleman callers than the operator"
I was going to explain how that turtle's words affected me, but I have no words.
That is the most vile insult I've ever recieved from a turtle.

Ooof the last question. Being an ugly WOMAN in particular adds a weird element. So many women talk about men and dating and going out like they are always in danger, they talk about the ways they're hit on, or how they feel about cat-calling. These things are always talked about as the Female Experience or whatever. But not only do men see me as a blob instead of a woman, I can't relate to women at all when they talk about their experience as a woman because of this. I've never felt unsafe walking down the street because no one would ever want to look at or touch me. Never been hit on, never been flirted with, never been cat-called, never been someone's crush. It's alienating as hell not only from people in general, but from my gender.

I’m so glad taxes are all automatically filed, updated, and returned in my country. I literally have to do nothing every year unless my income changes and that’s just a ten-minute form online.

Having to actually do them on an annual basis sounds like a nightmare.

I am so glad that woman used the word rebarbative. I like to think I have a rather expansive vocab bank in my brain, but that's a new one for me and I LOVE that word now. It's so good.

Cortisol is the body's reaction to stress, not the creator of stress. So working out reduces stress, and reducing stress lowers cortisol

on the topic of exercise, my pappy is 91, almost 92 and he is still very sharp and healthy. he swims 2 miles every morning. it is also socialization for him, hes got a whole community that he has gained from it which is important for longevity! when my granny died and he didn't show up to the pool for 3 days, a lady he swims with came to check on him. its really nice to know he has more than family to check up on him.

Attraction bias is a thing, it’s just like racism. As humans we naturally find comfort with those we find easier to look at, so we unconsciously create biases towards those we think look better, and it’s especially easy if the majority of people you spend time with, whether their personalities are good or bad, are conventionally attractive. That’s the main reason why twist villains were such a cool phenomena back when they weren’t everywhere, because it was easier to be more comfortable around someone who looks nice only for them to reveal they’re evil and break the convention.

12:00 I remember when my depression really picked up it made a DRASTIC difference. I was walking every day, I was going a mile in 12-15 minutes. Then I realized it went up to 16. Then 22. Then 25. And no matter how much I focused on walking faster I kept getting a longer time. It was freaking me out, it kept going up to the point where it would take me 45 minutes to walk a mile, the exact same route I'd been taking for months.

I've had the same group of people fetishize and be very weird and obsessive over me, obsess in an opposite vitriolic way when I gained weight due to health issues. Some people are really really gross and would prefer you miserable with an ED if it meant they could project their feelings on you.
