Loss of resilience may limit human lifespan | Lifespan News Extra

A paper published in Nature explores human longevity from the angle of loss of resilience, that is the gradual age-related expansion of time that the body needs to recover from stress. According to the findings, this might be the limiting factor of human lifespan. The study introduced an index called dynamic state organism index, or DOSI, which relies on a type of common blood test known as complete blood count (CBC). Variations of this index over time are intended to measure resilience, that is how quickly the body recovers from stresses such as illnesses. According to the data, with age the DOSI variance increases, which means the body is more affected by stress. At the same time, the ability of the body to recover back to its baseline diminishes, and eventually it becomes impossible. Extrapolations from this data is what led the researchers to conclude that the maximum human lifespan might be around 150 years tops, the point after which the DOSI variance diverges irreversibly from the baseline. Of course, it may be possible that medical interventions yet to be discovered may counter the loss of resilience, leading to longer and healthier lifespans.
