Car rental companies desperately want you to but their insurance and will make you pay for the smallest of damages if you don’t. But should you buy their insurance and are the alternative forms of car rental insurance worth it?

I recently learned that many American Express cards are eligible for "premium car rental insurance." You need to enroll your eligible Amex card, but, if you're enrolled, your Amex coverage for damage and theft becomes primary..Amex will charge you a fee each time you rent a car, but I think it's well worth it. The fee is per rental (up to 42 days in most states), not per day. Anyway, if you are an Amex card holder, you may want to check it out!
