A dear friend and long time avid gardener once told me “Life is too short to live with a tree you don’t like!” Applies to all plants, I think! Great show.

I think it is harder to remove a healthy plant than a sick one. My YouTube gardening friends have given me the encouragement to get rid of plants that don’t make me happy and it is worth it in the end.

This fall, we’ve done the same. I’ve pulled plants I’m not in love with. We tote them to the front yard by the sidewalk and I write “Free” with sidewalk chalk. Within a day, maybe two, they’ve disappeared, and hopefully loved by someone else. It’s a win/win.

Does Strawberry Hill have thorns? You’ll probably snag your clothes if so. I’m not familiar with this rose, but I wouldn’t put most roses in a position like that. I have Zephrine Drouhin by my front walk, but it’s thornless and a sweet smelling, prolific blooming rose. The catch is that although it does repeat bloom, the encore is never like the fantastic spring show. Another plus, however, is that it blooms in spring and is finished with its first flowering before the Japanese Beetles emerge. Best wishes with your plantings!

I am in the process of redoing several beds and removing plants. I gave away most of the the plants I removed. My neighbors had places in their yards for the plants, and I was glad. I like the beds better now with new plants, and my neighbors liked getting free plants. Win-win!

Is love to have some David Austin roses, so I cringed a bit to see you throw that one away, but I agree - plant and keep what makes you happy! I’m busy rearranging my gardens now, too - worked three hours yesterday and already love the progress I made! So satisfying!

I always liked the colour and form of golden celebration flowers but hesitated because of the upside down blooms ☹️.
I took a chance this year and although it scores on fragrance all the blooms are upside down, great if you're a lepracaun but disappointing AND it gets terrible Blackfoot. So despite the mouthwatering colour photos of this rose I might shovel prune it

I think teasing Georgia is a good pick but Olivia is also a drooper. It’s small but beautiful flowers.

It appeared to be a form of a climbing rose, with its lengthy branching

I thought you said if it doesn’t fart joy throw it away lol. I had to go back and listen again and heard it correct spark not fart 💨 lol but fart works too!!! I have a couple David Austin’s I bought this year and none of them did very well. Im hoping it was just because it was the first year and that next year they will hit their stride. Your garden is coming along beautifully. Just bought a flat of pansies and violas for a cheap quick fix to my fall containers. It rained all day though so maybe tomorrow.

That was a climbing rose. The long canes gave it away. When growing up and over an arbor, the nodding blooms face downward where you can see them! A climbing rose with clematis can go great when grown together.

My sentiments exactly! Get rid of it if you’re not happy. Oh Lordy! I am starting Honeysuckles on an arbor. I hope that I don’t have the issues that you have had. Take care, 🌞 Sunshine!

Hi Matthew! It's too bad the rose didn't work for you, but the one you got to replace it is a beautiful color and will be really pretty there. I love the colors on the 2 climbing roses you are considering for your arbors. I'm excited for you about your fence going in next Thursday, weather permitting. Fingers crossed for good weather for you! I'm looking forward to seeing it and what you plant by it, and meeting your pups. Thank you so much for sharing!

Matthew, I totally agree with you on removing any plants, trees, or shrubs from my landscape that aren't performing or have reoccurring issues. After all, it's my property, and no one else is entitled to tell me what I should or shouldn't do in my landscape. However, I do love hearing constructive suggestions and ideas from other gardeners. I give away lots of starter plants and produce every year, and I love the suggestion that someone made about putting plant divisions on the curb along with a FREE sign. I may do that next spring, but I'll never give away something that has created a problem for me.
I totally am enjoying your videos. Have a great weekend. ~Margie

A hard pill to swallow is ripping something out and tossing it. I have stated before that I like to move things to a fringe area which I do have plenty of but I have lambs ear that must go because I am redesigning that whole flower bed to adjourn new veggie beds. It can be very invasive even though it has great texture and flower stalks. It is getting ripped out and put near the big pond. We do what must be done. Have you checked out any Brugmansia to add to the garden? They are magnificent and have a wonderful fragrance early morning and late afternoon. That roses failure may be the very reason it was pulled from the catalog. I can't wait to see the fence installed.

Thanks for the good advice about removing and replacing what you don’t much like.
