David Austin Rose Review - Emily Bronte

I think this is the case where everyone's environment, growing conditions and other factors can highly affect how your rose grows and how your rose performs. David Austin has Emily Bronte as one of their best for health as well as their best for fragrance. While I would agree that she is very healthy, I do not agree that she is one of the most fragrant. I have many more roses in my garden, and many other David Austin roses in my garden that I would list as more fragrant. That does not mean that I don't love having her in my garden.....not at all. She is covered in flowers, and the color is stunning. She is very healthy, has long stems which are great for cutting, and best of all she is healthy. I true joy in the rose garden!

Emily Bronte:
- 4ft tall by 3.5ft wide.
- 106 petals.
- Medium Leaves and dark green.
- Flowers are 3.5 inches or medium size.
- Cream white with apricot, peach and soift pink.

The best way to plant this rose is to purchase soil specifically for Roses. You can use the entire bag to fill up a container or amend your current ground soil with this. This is the product that I used:

While planting, it's a good idea to add some fertilizer for these plants to munch on because they have a lot of work to do. If you are planting a bare root rose then they have to first set new roots and then new leaves and flowers. Growing those beautiful roses is a lot of work and these plants are big feeders! You will also need to feed them every 14-21 days during the growing season. Feed your plants with this (Espoma Rose Fertilizer):

Do you have Aphids? This is my go-to spray for not only aphids but also Japanese Bettles, White Flies, Spider Mites, and other bugs that won't leave my beautiful roses alone!

A bare root rose will need to be soaked in water for a minimum of 2 hours, but it's best to let them soak for 5-6 6 before putting them into the ground.

When you plant a rose, plant it deep. Put the crown of the plant below the soil grade. It's always a good idea to have some mulch too because they like moist soil.

And, last but not least you will want to have some spray on hand that can kill bugs, aphids, white flys, etc. This Organic spray has Neem oil which you will want to spray every few weeks. This will also help with black spot and powder mildew. If you have ever grown a rose you know these take a bit of work, but are well worth all the love. This is my go-to rose spray:

Enjoy!

I just got Emily this year and I have had the same experience. Tons of growth on the plant itself, but only two measly blooms. Patiently waiting for next season! 🤞🏾

Thanks for the Review! I bought both Emily Bronte and Eustacia Vye this spring, so I´m looking forward to seeing the development this summer. I got 9 different bare-root roses in, most of them from David Austin.

Thank you for the review, thinking to get them both, now I know better what I want. Planting on zone 10a here.

Hi! Thanks for this great review of Emily Bronte. I don't have this rose, but I've heard from people who do this it does well in shade or partial shade, so anyone with a shady garden, this might be one to look out for!

Thanks for the review. I just planted one, a bareroot. I did not order Emily but another rose which is not available so they gave me Emily instead. With your review I'm at peace that it'll be okay.

Beautiful rose. Just ordered an own root from Heirloom Roses. I wonder if the growth habit of it will be more in line with what DA claims. I live in Texas zone 9B (updated by the USDA) so it will probably be bigger as we have long summers. 😅

This rose. I was going to dig her out this spring. I've had her for 5 years this year and she's only given a handful of small blooms. She is a leggy climber in my garden (Zone 9a) and even though she doesn't bloom much, she's a vigorous grower. So I cut her to the ground last fall because I'd just had enough. She is now 6 ft. tall and gorgeous with multiple blooms. I guess patience is the key. And yes, she is fragrant, but she doesn't compare to Abraham Darby.

I have this one and it’s been struggling in zone 9b Texas for me. Healthy but I think our heat/humidity may be too much. Others here in my area have said she is slow to bloom. Mine has yet to bloom.

Does the Eustacia Vye have a strong fragrance?

Which rose has the best fragrance (not a traditional old rose scent though) in your opinion?

The fragrance may be enigmatic just like Emily. Ps. The portrait is of her eldest sister Charlotte and the book is Wuthering heights : a world classic.

Beautiful- first year - blooms - then twigs - contacted DA customer service for help and advice. Told me it was my fault for not potting it up soon enough. Not impressed.
