Fish n Chips

song from 'Cricket on the Hearth' by Rankin/Bass, 1967

This clip was made by a good friend of mine, since I couldn't find JUST this song on Youtube. But now you can!

~~~
Diamonds, furs, and ocean trips
They don't go with tuppence tips
Don't feed me champagne talk
When we're eating fish and chips
Half-a-pints and smokey kips
Were never meant to touch my lips
Don't speak those platinum words
When we're eating fish and chips
Can't you get out of the habit
Of saying mink when you mean rabbit
Or saying sable when you can't afford raccoon
You've got caviar taste and shad roe pockets
And you never-ever buy me the moon
With my life I've come to grips
Throw away your clever quips
I'm prepared to love you
And to love my fish and chips
~~~

Thanks to chopstewie for the lyrics

Yeah, Charles Dickens always intended to have a random scene with a small society of anthro animals and a furry bordello in his Christmas stories, but he didn't have the technology to write that.

No joke. This is actually a pretty good song.

This cat was, and still is, my favorite character from this movie

I distantly remember a time before Phelous when I didn't have earworms from obscure animated films constantly in my head.

Gotta say, Abbe Lane had an excellent voice back in 1967 - can't comment about now (yes, she is still alive) but dayum.

This is the finest Christmas carol of all time.

In the background you can see a painting of a centaur holding a cornucopia or some kind of huge musical instrument.
That means that the humanoid animals when to see the sexy cat sing, at a night club where they celebrate a mythological creature that did... problematic things, while being half human and half animal.
That... can't be an accident, right? They wanted to do some real worldbuilding in that one scene, right?

Okay, hold on a minute
So at 0:44 she sings "Can't you get out of the habit, of saying mink when you mean rabbit, or saying sable when you can't afford raccoon"
So, she's a cat, in a bar full of dogs and rats and birds, singing about wearing the fur of other animals,
which would probably be of approximately equal intelligence to the animals in the audience
Hmmm

THANK YOU!!!! for posting the correct lyrics! All over the internet (well...all 2 sites ;) ) they listed "shallow pockets" and you can tell that's not what she's saying. "Shad roe pockets" makes sense as its the antithesis of caviar. And its alaso much more clever! Woo-Hoo! Karaoke hereI come! :P

This seems like something out of a Ralph Bakshi movie

The song itself isn't bad.
The visuals on the other hand...

User FelisRin, pointed out an error in my transcription:

Fist line should read "Diamonds, furs, and ocean trips."

I never knew what the cat meant when she slid her tail across that dog's face....until 1 year later.
