Remember Netbooks? Using one in 2020.

It's 2020! I dust off an old Asus EEE PC netbook and attempt to use it for a week. It's a bit slow with the built in HDD so I upgrade it with a 250 GB SSD. Here's my experience with it.

I have an HP Mini, and doubled the ram to 2 and installed Mint. I've had it with me to England twice now, and I leave it in the hotel room and copy all my photos to it in the evening. I bought a carrying bag for it when it was new, and the bag has other compartments. Had to replace the battery a while back. Cost me about 50 bucks, but the computer is old and doesn't owe me anything.
I use my desktop running Ubuntu mostly.

My netbook is still alive and use it for emulators as a portable arcade sonce my other laptop is much bigger and harder to lug around. Upgraded the memory and it helped with the speed a bit.

I use FreeOffice on my EeePC. It's much more resource-efficient than LibreOffice and can handle MS Office formats better too.

As for coding, I find Geany and Kate work best. I agree that real IDEs are out of the question. The hardware just doesn't cut it.

Have you tried the Raspberry Pi operating system on it? I installed it on a friend's netbook and it was the best operating system for the limited resources of a netbook.

I still have mine, last used around 2011 / 12. Has Windows XP on which I'd like to replace with something workable, but don't know how to.

A netbook would make a good remote desktop client. But then again, tablets do that job much better too.
