5D Classic here! I ve been using it for years years. 2005 manufacture date. It is still usable. Even commercially. It takes brain and not money, to produce great pics. Postprocess does a lot as well.

But switching to R6II next month. Cant wait.

The 5D Mk4 is my go to camera for professional work. I have had it since 2016 and have no plans to change. I bought an R7 for travel compactness and it's very nice but the pictures from the 5D can't be beat.

I absolutely love mine! It just works! I use it to photograph EVERYTHING!!! I would only trade it for the 1DX iii for the extra low light and smaller file size. The battery life is wonderful and the images feel so awesome! Thanks for thoughts!

Hey Ken, an excellent concise review of the Canon 5D Mark IV and its relevance in 2024.

Being a late adopter and still an owner of a Nikon D3100, I picked up a 5D only last weekend, to shoot at a wedding! It was the groom's D5. The D5 was a lot of fun to shot with and I was immediately struck by the weight and solidness of the grip and body's construction.

Your anecdotes that likened the 5D's robustness to a Toyota car where they had survived drops and drowning was insightful. I was handling the 5D as if it were a crystal glass, had always assumed that cameras and optics are fragile.

Still using this camera to this day, bought it around 2019! I really enjoy this camera a lot, and for what I do it’s almost perfect. Just used it for a wedding and it still produce some fantastic photos. I will say as I am getting even more experience with this camera. I am learning that lighting makes it even better, which is with most cameras obviously. But this one in particular, I try to make sure my lighting are as good as it can be so the camera can really shine.

The Canon 5D vs a more modern mirrorless like like choosing between 2024 and a 1960s Mustang. The modern Mustang may be technically superior, but the classic is far more satisfying.

Great review, thanks! I recently picked up my 7D with a 70-200 2.8 to shoot my kids’ ice hockey games. It still works well but I’m limited in less well lit venues (ISO 3200 gives so so results), and by the auto focus.

Do you think the 5D IV would be a good improvement on those metrics?

Full frame sensor and better overall image quality would obviously be nice as well.

Good all round evaluation. I have a 5Div and its output is fabulous. Heavy, yes... rugged, yes... Image quality, second to none! Any camera one has is only as good as the person using it 😄

Good Review! I want one for photos. I currently have a 90D I have mastered very well for photos, and I have 3 very expensive EF lens. I don't have a problem with mirrorless, but I can wait for bargains, and I am sure I will pick one that fits my usage.

The main problem i have with the 5D mark IV is its price. When comparing used prices, 5D Mark IVs still go for around 1000-1200 euro in good condition with shutter counts that are not insane. For roughly the same price (maybe 100-200 euro more) i can also pick up a R6 Mark 1, which makes the 5D Mark IV a really tough sell. Sure the resolution on the R6 is lower, but i dont think that matters much.

I came into photography during mirrorless. However I prefer the optical view finder. Also build quality. They don’t build them like this anymore

It's a great studio camera. Great for landscapes too. I brought it to Europe for our family vacation and it never left the hotel after the 2nd day. I just used the then new Huawei p30 pro. I just didn't want to carry a giant camera with a huge lens and bump into everyone in the subway. . Sure i could have taken hi-res photos of Paris, but i will just be trying to do photography instead of enjoying the trip.

What is best now for video that uses the same lenses?

You can use Tornado EOS for enabling C-Log for about 35 Bucks.
Also, having this as a b cam for filming stage events, having the 4K Crop can be very useful. Throwing a 70-200 Lens you can get nice close up’s from far away.
But yeah, for run and gun the crop and filesizes are bad in 4K.

I‘m still using it often to film with. It just works. The camera doesn’t try anything it won’t do. But when for example the DP AF locks, you can count on it.
I used a rental r5 for a few shoots and tbh, still getting back to my trusty mk4

The 5D is still relevant especially for still photography. Less so with video.
