Hey everyone! Today I am demonstrating the differences between DSLR and Mirrorless cameras at a portrait photoshoot and sharing some of the reasons I decided to switch to mirrorless. I hope you enjoy seeing all the side by side comparison photos between Sony vs Canon, let me know what you think of the differences/similarities in the comments! For my mirrorless camera I'm using the Sony A7IV with the 35mm f1.4 GM and for my DSLR I'm using the Canon 5D mkIV with the Canon 35mm f1.4 II

Thanks to our talented team for making this shoot possible:

The 5D Mark IV is also a camera released back in 2016... to see it coming so close with the side by side images is amazing.

Canon's photos always have much better highlights on the model's face.

you're the best! Great video as always Julia ! I don't know how my local camera store did it, but they were able to get me my A7IV unit in just two days ago, it's such a fantastic camera. I'm going to do a comparison with using the A7IV with my A7RIV.

Very informative comparison.. I myself was gifted with a 5d mark 4 a few days ago and everytime I watch the review of this camera they always compare it to some new mirrorless camera.. which proves to the point that although this camera came out 2016 it is still a good camera.. I also have a sony a6100 and it is so easy to use because of the eyes autofocus and the flip up screen.. but many times I grab my canon and still use it.and I enjoyed using both sony and canon and use them both and maximize their functions..

Yes! Please make the viewfinder vs. screen video. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

I totally agree with your opinion on the flip-out screen. I have both the A7III and the A7SIII, and I really miss the tilt screen when I shoot on the SIII.

I think that although it cannot be denied that mirrorless cameras are more technologically advanced and offer an array of features that we won't ever see in DSLRs as they've been officially abandoned by camera manufacturers, good pictures can be taken in any system, any camera type (rangefinder, mirrorless, DLSRs, rearview) and any brand. Case and point your side-by-side comparison showed that your proficiency using the tool got you to the same end result. It is in a lot of ways a case of convenience, technology makes it easier to get there but sometimes the discourse you hear from brands etc, especially when there's a new camera coming almost makes you think that there's only way to get to that desired outcome. New cameras and technology don't make existing ones worse. I appreciate that this was not any part of your message in this video I just wanted to share it. Lovely work as always, you've been one of my greatest inspirations when it comes to portrait photography, all the love from Scotland!

Having switched from a 5D Mark IV to mirrorless myself (R5 and R6), you overlooked that the Canon's LCD is excellent with almost full-screen focus coverage. You could touch focus on the model's face in live view and, with servo enabled, it will track her movements pretty well. I otherwise agree with your overall assessments. I switched myself for many of the same reasons you did.

I have both and the A7IV surprised me, the quality is so good and the camera is doing better job in focusing and tracking.

I still love the photos that come out of Dslr like canon 5d iv. Even if the sony technology has come a long way i think the picture quality still doesn’t match the canon 5d mark iv. The photos from canon has the 3d look and has more film aesthetic to it. And last but not least was looking into a optical view finder, it looks like looking through the soul of the subject, compare to looking into a tiny tv screen.

Hey Julia love it! 2 questions! 1. What camera are you using to film the behind the scenes? 2. I would like to see some sharper shots with a higher aperture like f/5.6 I noticed they were all 1.4 having such a shallow depth of field could cause some of that blur you were talking about. Just curious why you only chose to shoot so open! Other than that, I love your portraits :)

Another great video from Julia showing off a great colourful background with a beautiful model and it appears to me the Sony wireless camera wins this one! I love your videos Julia! Keep them coming
