Medicare Supplements for Under 65 | Medicare Disability

Medicare is a federal health program for people age 65 and over and certain folks under 65 who are on social security disability. Once you have been collecting social security disability benefits for 24 months, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.
Part A is your hospital insurance, and Part B is your medical and doctor insurance.
Original Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover everything at 100%. There are Medical and hospital deductibles and coinsurance, and in general Medicare pays about 80% and you have to pay the rest, the 20%.

Because of this, many people who are on Medicare decide to get a Medicare Supplement or Medigap Plan to supplement their original Medicare benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and they are designed to work with your Original Medicare benefits and to pay the 20% that Medicare doesn’t pay.

Although some states require it, Federal Law does not require that Medicare Supplement Insurance companies sell their Medigap plans to those under age 65. Because of this, if you are shopping for a Medicare Supplement Plan and you are under age 65 you may find that many insurance companies just don’t offer Medicare Supplement Plans in your area, or that the options are much more limited. Additionally, the pricing can differ for Medicare Supplement insurance if you are buying plan under age 65 than if you are 65 or older. In many areas Medicare Supplement Plans are much more expensive when you are under 65 and on Medicare due to disability.

Overall, if you are on Medicare under age 65 due to disability, your options for Medicare Supplement insurance will largely depend on where you are located. It’s always important to do your research and make an informed decision for your specific situation, weighing all the options available to you.

Hi- I realize that this video is 2yrs old, and you may not read. Breakdown- I am 54, disabled and sent a letter informing me that I have Medicare ABCD. No deductible and prescription drugs do not exceed $5. Yes social security takes out $180 monthly. Now, I am overwhelmed with how much dental and vision ( eye exams ) are available?
I was on a state funded medical plan prior to this headache. I don’t pay for anything including vision foot and dentures. Having my dentures alignment, and surprisingly a wisdom tooth (that wasn’t seen @ Xray and full mouth dentures already completed. Obviously, I’m concerned! Do I have to accept Medicare or can I continue with state insurance coverage. I live in Massachusetts. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah, either they have changed some of that or they made a mistake with me. I was approved for disability just 2 months ago, was paid back-payment, kicked off Medicaid a month later and immediately was sent a Medicare card (AB). No 24-month waiting period. Wish there was, rather stayed on Medicaid 2 more years. I haven't even got my monthly disability payment yet. Get the first one next month.

This is kind of complicated. Please be patient with me. We don’t understand why my husband with is on ss disability because of a accident. Now all his medical needs for that injury are covered under what is called a Medicare set aside MSA. SO MEDICARE only is for his yearly physical and a couple meds he takes. He’s only 58 Why is his gap insurance premium so high?we live in Illinois.

My wife is under age 65 and has been on SSD for over well 24 months, but we have private medical insurance through my employer. She hasn't received a Medicare card and we haven't paid any monthly fee and/or aren't being billed for part B. I believe they gave us the option to opt out and I think we chose that option due to having private medical insurance. Is that possibly what we did since no one is contacting us for part B payment?

My wife will be 64 this October. She is on SS disability and has Medicare part A. She did not need part B as she is covered under my employer group plan. My plant is shutting down on November 30th and my next job is uncertain. She wants to go ahead and start part B and D and either get a Medigap plan or an advantage plan. My question is if she opts for an advantage plan this year can she switch to a Medigap plan when she turns 65 next year?

My brother is under 65 has Medicare and supplemental plan due to disability. He started working again and his employer provides insurance for coverage for his family. Aware the employer insurance plan is the primary and Medicare is secondary as employer has excess of 20 employees. The question is how does his Medicare supplement kicks in?

My 28 year old Down syndrome son is on Medicare A, B, and D (for several years). He works part-time, pays his own part B and D premiums (out of his social security check). Very healthy. (Levothyroxin only med.) We live in Wisconsin. In case he has some major health issue he should probably get an Advantage plan, right? Are supplement plans even available to him?

I will be 54 this july and i have been disabled for over 10 years. I am looking into getting better coverage than just A + B. I recently had to have a benign tumor removed from my foot. My co-pays and or gap payments came to a lot. I am also worried about having a hospital stay. I had some complications after the surgery and almost needed to require a hospital stay. Im still recovering from the surgey which was on 12/6/23. Basically i need some help and advice. Would you be able to assist me ?

Thanks
Joe
