Should you buy the 14" or the 16” MacBook Pro (M1 Max or M1 Pro) as a software developer? This video is a look at the difference between these from a software developer's point of view and what I've learned over the last few years of using a 16" machine.

For the "columns" measurement, you probably should close VS Code's side bar. They didn't look equal in size in the brief glimpse shown. (Yes, I know this isn't a scientific measurement but hey -- we're pedantic programmers here)

One thing to mention about the trackpad and running out of space is that, if you do run out of space you can literally just keep the original finger pressed down where it is at the edge of the trackpad and then use a finger from your other hand to continue dragging as much as you like from anywhere else on the track pad. As long as the original finger press is still held down you can drag and lift the other finger as much as you like and it will keep moving.

Just a shout out that this content is fantastic. I am thinking of switching from windows (for the first time in my life) and these videos have really helped give me an impression of the machines day to day. Keep up the great work!

2:07 "Here is an Xcode project. And take a look at the menu at the top. You'll see that on the 16 inch model, the Xcode..." -- I stared so hard at the screen waiting to actually see the menu but womp womp lol

I just got the 16” this weekend. I am an artist and graphic design is what I mostly do on it so screen size is a must so I can see everything well.

If you code on it as a primary display I wouldn’t want the 14 inch. I was happy to go from 15 to 16 inch in 2019

attach 2 monitors, do usual staff,
open couple project
compile, recompile, open 20 tabs on chrome etc etc
and then measure batery life and fan noise

The notch is like you were in Remote Desktop, just with a fixed Center “bar”. 😀

Is it overheating when you do a coding or typing on your lap? What is the most comfortable Macbook 14 or 16 to lie in bed with a laptop? can you open 80-100 tabs at once in browser without freezing? Is it overheating when you plugin external 1-2 monitors and what power usage laptops start using in 14 mac with 8 cores vs 16inch 10cores?

I watched over 40 youtube reviews last 9 days to decide 16' or 14'. I bought 16' last night and I want to cancel my order for 14' . Once I cancel my order I can re-purchase 16' again. It is crazy. I can't decide. 14' is so sexy to move around but 16' has pretty screen for movies. Help me god.

it's funny, I Carry with me a MSI GT70 from 2014, it weight with the PSU, i dont know, maybe 7KG? so, when someone says 2.2kg is heavy, I laught and my spine stop cracking

Can you show VSCode with a vertical split? typically on a smaller device (incl my 15") id hide the project file list (cmd+b), turn off the minimap (View -> Show Minimap) and use it with a vertical split, e.g. code on left, test code on right. Often with the integrated terminal at the bottom too.

Have you done any battery tests between the two machines? Really curious to know how much battery gets used doing things like compiling large projects, basic vs code usage, etc.

Agree with you on the size issues on an airline. I run a 2012 MBP, and I feel cramped. Yet, here I am, considering the 16” model—because that is my preference. If (or more correctly) when I fly again, I will just have to live with the cramped airline usage. At least I know the machine will run cool on my lap. But with that said, the 14” vs 16” size is worth mentioning on this.

Gonna get 16 for iOS dev. I think screen size will be good enough to use it without external monitor.

I watched hundreds of videos. And decided 16" then it arrived, 5 days were enough to change my mind. I was not looking for ultra mobile laptop but still 16 felt not right. I returned and now waiting for 14" to arrive. Thanks apple for allowing the returns. If not i would have to live with wrong choice for few years.

Battery life mostly matters on long flights. For that I carry a spare 100w USB-C battery

Great Video!
About the notch, if we use background with black colour(at least on top part is black), then the top bar is entirely black and the notch is not very obvious.
The problem you shared remains though.

I guess Alexander has never experienced extended crunch times. :) Quite a few times I've done *really* long coding sessions, with my longest one being close to 32 hours. Of course, I was near power the entire time, so wouldn't need a 21 hour battery life, but still: obnoxiously long coding sessions do happen. :o
