When a male athlete is “unstoppable”, he’s seen as awesome. When a female athlete is “unstoppable”, she’s banned. 😐

I think the worst part about this is the people doubling down with “well we wouldn’t have accused her of being a man if the trans people stopped confusing everyone about gender.” Can’t even take accountability for spreading/believing misinformation, it’s always someone else’s fault

It’s absolutely insane how quick people are to accuse someone (specifically women) of being trans nowadays because they proved to be stronger than their opponent. It just proves transphobia affects everyone, including cis people.

"If you do well in a sport you can't be a woman" is a bold-ass line from people trying to call themselves feminists 💀

This whole thing is so heartbreaking. I'm a cis woman who is tall, muscular, and has a female partner, and I've gotten misgendered before and it felt awful. I've been called "the man" in my relationship simply because of my appearance and my own mother asked if I "was a man now" because I stood up for trans people to my family. Even though I'm cis, it still feels awful to be misgendered. No matter what a person identifies as, it's wrong and unfair to purposely misgender someone. Please be kind to each other out there ❤️

I'm Taiwanese. I'd like to elaborate more on Lin Yu-Ting's case.

She was a DV victim, and the reason why she got into boxing was a child's wish to protect her mother. She first appeared on news when she was 13-ish, so we as a society basically watch her grow up in front of our eyes. (She was not that famous, but you get the point.) She has been competing IBA World Boxing Championships since 2013 (when they were still AIBA). She participated in 2013, 2018, 2019, 2022 without any trouble.

In 2023, Yu-Ting was disqualified by IBA AFTER she had won bronze medal in IBA World Boxing Championships. In a Taiwanese documentary, she and her coach stated that IBA asked them to sign the confirmation document without even letting her appeal, which I'd assume that's why in IBA's official statement issued on 1 Aug 2024, it was stated that Lin didn't appeal. After she went back to Taiwan, Taiwanese Ministry had conduct another test which results in qualified outcome, but they still couldn't appeal their case. Since then, her coach had advise her to bring her test result with her wherever and whenever she competes in order to protect herself.

On 6 Aug 2024, during IBA press conference, a Taiwanese journalist asked "if you had known their test result would disqualified them in 2022, why didn't you let them know before they started their matches?" (I'm paraphrasing here) And the IBA president answered with "Everything is according to the rules of IBA. I respect China. China is my favourite country. Taiwan is a part of China."(Again, paraphrasing) The entire press conference is just ridiculous.

On the bright side, Lin Yu-Ting will now be competing for gold medal. I'm really happy for her, and I wish her the best.

Im not intersex but I'm a cis female with a hormone condition and honestly the way people have talked about this poor athlete is awful. Not just for her, actual trans people and intersex people but also for cis women with high testosterone or other hormone conditions that are made to feel less than

it is absolutely misogynistic. like, when a man breaks a record, he's celebrated, and when a woman breaks a record, she's transvestigated. they never scream so broadly of trans women losing to definite cis women, they never speak of trans men competing and winning vs cis men.

it's just to keep women down, to keep them from getting there, from actually levelling the field and being just as good in general as men are in sports. it's really sad that mighty people with power to spread the word and willingness to call themselves feminists would serve that purpose.

As a cis woman who has been misgendered in the past due to my natural body shape, transphobia genuinely scares me.
Whilst I'm not an athlete, generic transphobic policies (like policing public toilets) would effect me and prevent me from using those spaces.

Such nonsense is not helpful to cis people either, despite what some transphobes claim.
I hope that any trans people reading this are in a safe place with supportive people around them.

In addition to all the transphobia and intersexism, it's important to remember how much racism is involved too. These sorts of accusations almost always get leveled against women of color that don't look as traditionally feminine by Western standards

There are 3 trans/nonbinary athletes in the Paris games that I am aware of
Quinn (Canadian women's Soccer team) - Nonbinary (First openly trans and non-binary athlete to win a medal in Tokyo)
Nikki Hiltz (US women's track and field) Nonbinary
Hergie Bacyadan (Philippines Women's Boxer) Trans man (not taking HRT which is why he has to compete in the women's category

As a non-binary person I am really enjoying the non-binary rep <3

Why are those people acting like some helpless woman was brutalised? Of course people will get hit at the hitting people competition!

Acting like the female athletes are somehow helpless damsels is not only sexist, but patronising as well. Surely at the Olympic levels, there are little to no differences in physical ability between the male and female athletes? And that is not even talking about the rancid levels of racism here.

It is absolutely heartbreaking that we are at a point where it's appropriate to speculate on someone's gender, threaten invasive testing and violence, all in the name of protecting women.
