I love guidelines for this reason, but I also think it’s important to not over rely on them. A lot of growth can come if you can “see” the guidelines without drawing them out in my opinion, but if you need to, definitely do use them.

The guidelines are the powerhouse of the sketch

I say it depends. Drawing without guidelines is great for drawing on the fly, eg. in an airplane (pun intended) or in public places and is extremely healthy for building confident linework. I would draw thumbnails and ideas without guidelines and finished piece with them. But sometimes it is great just to cut loose and go with the flow!

Kim Jung Gi was one of the great exceptions to this. The GOAT. He still used guidelines, it was just in his head - and the transition from guideline to final line happened instantly on paper.

Sometimes I just don't put too many guidelines because it would confuse me instead so I just rely on the eraser and the pen.

I do use them but the problem is how much they can obscure what you're looking at so I can see why people go without them. Also, the answer is 4, just -3 on both sides

Thank you for all your shorts tutorials. It’s great instruction in a small package. The anatomy tutorials are especially great. Even after practicing anatomy from reference, details of specific muscles and such can slip my mind, and I never have words to describe it in my head (necessary as someone with aphantasia!) The brief descriptions on your shorts are perfect. These are “common mistakes” for a reason, because they are easy to make, so anyone can benefit from a little anatomy reminder!

Graphic Art is about results not the medium to reach it.
Use every kind of tool or strategie to make your art better. Guidelines are just the rudimentary foundation of a skecth and artwork, but if you can skip this step, then do it. Its about if you need this tool to success in your art.
