Definitely something a lot of beginners often rush through haha

Drawing elipses on the body parts completely changed how I imagined them in 3d space, felt like breaking a wall that had been there for years in my mind, everyone should learn to draw cylinders in perspective

"Do it now" has to be the most motivating thing I've ever heard

My problem is going from the simple geometric construction to the detailed character pose. Creating a useful geometric construction is a skill that takes a whole lot of practice by itself

As somebody who just got over this- please please PLEASE do not use this construction sketch as your actual sketch or something that you will draw over. It’s to help you work it out so then you can approach it gesturally and with more concern to the readability and design of the overall composition without worrying about where or how something will overlap or go. It should be fast.

You know even though I draw on paper, you have still let me grow as an artist as well. I attempt to upload some stuff and show progress off as well, it's because of channels like these I continue to grow.

A tip from an artist who tried this for a while:

Sometimes, using shapes winds up limiting what you can do, or at least make you feel that way. As of late I usually use lines to have a general idea, then slowly build the anatomy over those lines in a light pencil lead/translucent layer.

However, having the shapes does help, it just depends on where your style is and how you like your art. More realistic? The shapes work! Stylised? Lines and a layout of the actual dynamic help too! And using a mix of both is excellent as well. I actually recommend using both when needed.

But also remember, art is art. There are no true laws, rules, or requirements. Your creativity is the limit

When i started doing this i still found my poses to be stiff so heres a tip: before sketching ur pose as shapes, do a sillouette

Draw nothing but black as the shapes (if that makes sense. It simplifies it down even further and you can see if the pose is dynamic enough to stand out or stiff. Hopexthis makes sense 😅

Thank you. This technique is hands down the single most important thing that has improved my drawing. I tried my first ever foreshortening with this and it's been my most well-proportioned drawing yet.

I struggle with this a ton. I seem to be okay with drawing from references, but it's still incredibly difficult to draw from imagination, especially those simple shapes. Ironically I think drawing the 3D forms is more difficult than drawing from reference. Like does anyone else struggle to find the planes of the body? Sometimes I can't tell how a torso is twisted, why I can see the pecs AND the back at the same time, or how the legs are supposed to be drawn. Augh I need more practice, but if anyone has any tips or other videos that could help, I'm all up for it.

I found it hard to describe what makes sketching and simplicity in the beginning of the drawing process so much easier and benefit the quality of the finished product so that my younger sister could understand, they're a beginner artist in the beginning of highschool, and I'm 5 years older than her at age 20, I'm experienced but by no means a professional for sure, and I began doing that technique sometime during my middle school years so by the time I was a senior in highschool, it came naturally to me to do that. And currently my sister is confused by it so she hasn't really tried incorporating it so seeing this video explain it better than I could is quite relieving as I want to help my sister and even my little brother whom is 10 years young than I am and starting to show interest in being an artist or shows interest in drawing and making art in general grow as artists with a someone to help them where I didn't have help at their age aside from little tips and tricks here and there from my art teacher back in elementary. So yeah definitely a helpful practice when doing more finished or professional works.

Tip- don't play around with anatomy too much before it turns into a hentai

Anatomy and foreshortening used to be the thing I hated the most but once I studied them a bit I found I actually enjoy doing it much more then other things I like to do
