Climate change effects us all, but it doesn't effect us equally. In this thorough talk, Dr. Martin examines the intersections of climate change and racism, from who's at the table during policymaking, to which communities are effected by natural disasters, and which receive resources first. Incorporating multidisciplinary data and research, Dr. Martin proposes ways for us to scrutinize bias in ourselves, our workplaces, and our social groups. Dr. Atyia Martin is a Certified Emergency Manager with a diverse set of experiences in public health, emergency management, intelligence, and homeland security. Mayor Martin Walsh appointed her as the Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Boston as part of the 100 Resilient Cities initiative pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for leading the development and implementation of Boston’s Resilience Strategy. Boston will focus on advancing racial equity as the foundation of the Resilience Strategy process.

From around 5:40 to 6:10 there's a point being made that institutional racism is perpetuated by "us, all of us". That all of us are part of that "system of racism" is what I take from that. Okay, so the point seems to be somwehere along the idea that there's individual responsibility in every person for the system of racism.

From around 9:15 to 9:37 there's a point being made that is expressed as follows "institutions and the way they're run and the systems that we keep talking about, they're the things that are broken, not the people". Now I'm thinking which is it? People or institutions?

Not very compelling arguments, and sadly a certain ammount of points just seems to be implicitly true because they're popular in this day and age.

I think what Dr Martin is trying to say here is that climate change will disproportionately effect people of colour. More people of colour live in areas vulnerable to environmental degradation as a result of climate change (you know flooding, desertification etc.).
Personally in this talk I would have liked more exposition on the intersection between climate change and racism however I did find myself being well educated on how racism can pervade all aspects of life. Perhaps that's the most important understanding to have when talking about racism and climate change 🤔 yeah.

yes!! I am so happy I found this. I am writing my college dissertation on the elements of exclusion and lack of representation that people of colour are experiencing within activism, climate change movements especially

Here is a person attempting to cast guilt on the descendants of the very people who fought for their freedom. This person exemplifies and portrays a perfect example of racism.

Excellent talk. Equity is the Key. Equity is designed to make society better as a whole. Giving a person what they need so that society can benefit.

It's called 6 degrees of separation. Everything can be "interconnected" if you look hard enough in your attempt to connect them.

Her talk needed structure and a good PowerPoint. This reminds me of professors going on a tangent more than TED.
