Environmental Racism: How It Started vs. How It’s Going | Full Frontal on TBS

Great news! Joe Biden is signing climate change-based executive orders AND appointing people of color to take the lead on environmental justice for the first time ever. And it's not a moment too soon for communities of color who have been disproportionately suffering the ill effects of corporate greed and environmental racism. It's time to get those resources to the people who need them the most. And also, some f*cking clean water, please.

First ever Indigenous director of the department that handles Indigenous affairs? Only took 245 years.

"It's not what you think, but it IS what you imagine" is such a great line!

“Basically, In the past, if a blizzard devastated a black community, FEMA would help the snow before it helped the community.”

She said it as a joke, but I’m afraid someone’s gonna prove it actually happened.

Well 1 year... Make them live there and drink that same water for one year. No paying out, 1 year is OK.

Thank you Sam! With all due respect to your TV counterparts, YOU are often the singular voice in such topics that need to be brought to attention. Thank you. You deserve much credit!!!

W.H.O. has said all areas with refineries are hazardous and people should be moved. Oh that was like 20 years ago and lots of kiddies have cancer.

Thanks for mentioning Louisiana, we've got a lot of funny people in cancer alley, c'mon down! We could use a few journalists to ask questions to Louisiana Economic Development and the Port of South Louisiana!

This is so heartbreaking because the big mitten has the best water on the planet and people so nice and polite I get asked if I'm Canadian. "Oh, gawsh nuh, my mother just raised me right."

I grew up in Buffalo and the government is letting people build homes in Love Canal, again. The hazardous waste is still there, still seeping into the ground water through cracked reservoirs. Let's live there, right?

It’s good to hear someone talk about native issues, same biz is going on in Canada btw.

Wait wait, ONE year in prison for knowingly poisoning thousands of people? Wow, I have no words.

(But let's be real, he'll get the 1000 dollar fine which doesn't even count as a slap on the wrist given how rich I assume he is).

Environmental Racism = Externalities of costs

That thing that all trained economists live to ignore. Like free pollution, such other examples include job layoffs, it only matters to the employer that they're no longer paying the expense of a wage, but for the worker who has a family and lives in a community, that lost income is everything and affects widely; but that's an external cost a company is not beholden to care for.

Can someone tell me, if Snyder is found guilty, does that then open him up to multiple civil suits?

There is a wonderful documentary produced by Elliot Page about environmental racism in Nova Scotia - specifically as it effects the indigenous and black communities...called "There's Something In The Water".

Thank you for bringing light to this! Here on the southeast side of Chicago, neighbors started a hunger strike two days ago to address environmental concerns. Our air already is the most contaminated with PM2.5 (contaminants the size of the coronavirus) and the city is about to approve a permit allowing for another big polluter to move into our neighborhood in the middle of a pandemic. Worse still, this company is being forced to relocate from its (wealthy and 90% white) northside location bc the area is being rezoned for lofts, so they are moving to my neighborhood (not wealthy and 90% BIPOC), the historic literal dumping ground of Chicago. Worse still, there is a manganese spill that still hasn't been cleaned up and people cannot even plant food in their back yards. Worse still, we have the disproportionately high asthma rates and lead... Worse still, the city is bent on approving the permit. And now people are on hunger strike in the middle of a pandemic trying to save their children's lungs. #StopGeneralIron #DenyThePermit #HungerStrike

I REALLY hope that the Biden administration does something about environmental protection. It already has done some work in the right direction, but it HAS to do more.
