EU Parliament : Statement by the candidate for President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen

Germany's Ursula von der Leyen, candidate for President of the European Commission is going to adress the European Parliament this morning. It's von der Leyen's last chance to make her case to EU lawmakers in her bid to become the first woman president of the European Commission. She needs to secure a majority in a confirmation vote being held later today. But success is far from certain. Von der Leyen faces hostility from parliamentary groups, who say she was foisted on them by national leaders. So she's been on a charm offensive, making a raft of promises to win support.

She seems alright but honestly, perhaps Council should have first and foremost permitted a Spitzenkandidat to TRY to get their own majority. If Timmermans had come up for a Parliament vote he could have found a coalition to get behind him, especially with the Greens and (former) Liberals. He'd just have had to break the EPP to do it.
