Parliament debates with Ursula von der Leyen, candidate for President of the European Commission

Ursula von der Leyen was proposed for President of the European Commission for a second term by the leaders of EU countries.

The candidate will take the floor in Parliament’s plenary session in July and outline her vision and plans as Commission President, followed by a debate with MEPs.

The vote by secret paper ballot will follow after.

The Commission President is elected for a five-year term by the European Parliament, following the European elections. The European Council proposes a presidential candidate to the Parliament. The proposed candidate generally comes from the largest political group in the Parliament. The Parliament has to approve the new Commission President by an absolute majority. Once approved, the European Council officially appoints the new President.

Parliament elects the President of the Commission, by absolute majority, via a secret ballot. If the candidate does not obtain the required majority, the leaders of EU countries will need to propose a new candidate within a month and Parliament will vote on the new candidate.

Von der Leyen’s husband, Heiko von der Leyen, holds a position at a U.S. biotech company, Orgenesis. Ursula von der Leyen has faced significant criticism and allegations related to the EU's COVID-19 vaccine deals, particularly with Pfizer.

Did you say “we have emerged stronger from the lockdowns”??? According to whom? The people who suffered from mental health crisis, the families that were split, the people forced to die alone in the hospitals, the denial of basic human rights such as going outside, being in nature and breathing fresh air, the business owners that lost their businesses, people who lost jobs because they didn’t vaccinate, the friends and families that turned against each other, the people who lost their livelihood - should I go on? Disgrace to say this Ursula. It’s criminal what was done and no one except for the regular citizens are paying for it. Give back the individual countries please and let us have our nations and be individuals. Then as individuals, let’s build stronger communities amongst people, neighbors, and create strong societies. We don’t need to be told what’s right and how we should behave, what we should eat, etc., we are not children, thank you very much. We are adults and we’ll manage just fine together as people. Globalization is not what’s needed, it’s individual communities that need to rise stronger.

How can they vote for a leader when the national parties are not saying who they supperi and what this person support. Nobody knows what is happening inside the parliament. The Eu has to change otherwise it is going to collapse. I will vote for any party that goes against eu

I think it's time for a change, people are getting poorer, we have low-quality food, expensive energy, gasoline, housing, heating, water...everything seems to be going backward, not forward. Not to mention salaries. It is necessary to talk with those who do not agree with you, that is why we elected those people!!!
