What happens when a narcissist loses their supply? When the narcissist loses their supply they experience narcissist collapse. Today, I will discuss signs of narcissistic collapse and what it looks like when a narcissist collapses. Another name for the narcissistic collapse is the narcissist breakdown. What does a narcissist breakdown look like and what causes a narcissist to break down? The narcissist lacks the ability to stabilize their internal thoughts and feelings on their own and this is why they rely so heavily on the supplies in their life. The narcissist must always have ready sources of supply to protect against narcissistic injury. If the narcissist feels as if they are at risk of being exposed, they will rely more on their supply to inflate their narcissistic ego to a point which serves as a safe buffer for them against the world they believe is out to get them.
As expected, the narcissist’s goal is to prevent collapse because they are aware this leads to feelings of shame. They may not have insight into what is happening, but they do remember how they felt the last time they experienced narcissistic injury, and they want to avoid this feeling again at all costs.
As a narcissist is on the verge of collapse, you will notice they are doing more and more things which inflate their supply. Let’s go over a few of those things so you know what to be on the look out for.
During the period in which their supply is draining and they are at risk of collapse, the narcissist will increase their narcissistic manipulation and punishment tactics. They will gaslight, name call, belittle, rage, give you the silent treatment, and may even discard you. All of these are done in a frantic effort to regain some control over their lives.
But despite their best efforts, it may not be enough, and they experience narcissist collapse. They can no longer convince the world around them that they are confident, superior, and all-knowing.
When the narcissist has no supply, they don’t have a way to feel better about themselves. So, what happens if the narcissist can't find a new supply or what happens when the narcissist runs out of supply? They fall apart and struggle in recovering. They have spent their entire life trying to protect against narcissistic injury and trying to prevent complete deflation of their narcissistic balloon. And when they fail they don’t know how to respond. So what happens when the narcissist has no supply? They must face reality which is something they have no ability to do.

I often see this when I set boundaries with toxic people or attacked back before I knew that was not recommended. Often, if not always, they 'put you in your place' by devaluing and then abandoning you. I recognize the behavior now and expect them to either not reply or reply and then drop off the face of the earth when I set a boundary. I never try to contact someone if they don't reply. Several times in life, I have witnessed men 40 to 65 years old act like a child 6-8 years old. It's hard not to see the similarity of their behavior, but it's still terrifying in the moment.

I see this with my spouse... she says, "I'm in survival mode".... she literally says that she feels like she is going to die. Then I talk to her and give her the supply she needs, and the cycle repeats... I'm starting to put it all together now that I have learned about NPD.
