Don't Make This 808 Tuning Mistake! ❌

A tip I see a lot when tuning 808 samples is to pitch the 808 up by 1, 2 or 3 octaves, so you can easily hear the pitch.

But here’s the problem with this. Most 808 samples have a pitchbend, where the pitch starts high, and drops down to a lower pitch.

When pitched 2 octaves up, an 808 sample will play back at four times the speed, shortening the attack.

Now the attack goes by so fast, you end up focusing on the long decay/sustain of the 808, and tuning to that.

Then when you pitch back down to the bass range, the attack is out of key.

If it's a busy pattern, you might be retriggering the 808 so much that the tail is hardly heard, depending on the sample and the style of music.

So your 808 will sound out of tune!

Stay tuned for my next video, where I’ll show you a trick to tune your 808s perfectly without pitching up.

“Here’s how to tune your 808’s”

“Just kidding do it by ear!” 😂

the long decay is what you should focus on when tuning. the pitchbend in the transients is there to simulate a kick

if you're in fl studio, open up ur 808 in edison, click the little flag icon and hit detect pitch regions. then you can open ur 808 in the channel rack and set it to the same note shown in edison. and then tune by ear from there if its a few cents or so off pitch

Shouldn’t you be focusing on the tail? The pitch bend is meant to operate as a transient to give the 808 its flavor while the tail is meant to create its tonality.

Fabfilter pro q. Find a harmonic resonance point in the kick, mouse over it to find out what the frequency is and check frequency chart for pitch. But yes, your ears should be good enough to tell you if you’re out of key. If you cant hear it, you need to train your ears more.
You can also see what key your “dot” point is on the displayed keyboard at the bottom of the window of Pro Q.

Wow I have always wondered why this was. Noticed it and it’s bugged me but didn’t realize it was endemic. I don’t know enough about this kind of music production but I’ve found your videos fascinating. Cheers.

Great, tuning by ear makes the difference. This and the Burial tutorial where he switches the grid off both show how variations 'pull the ear'.

Loop the tail and put a spectrum analyser on it, look at where the fundamental sits. That’s the note.

I’ve actually noticed this mistake by self and always used the tuner feature in ableton, helps…Use a tuner or yes hear by ear

“Do B and I’m not gonna show you how”

I use a Frequency analyzer, my ear, and a tuner to accurately tell me the pitch of kicks and 808s.

I mostly just make my 808 midi with fl keys and then copy the midi to the 808 sample track. Works every time.

I use a pitch plugin on the channel. That way the speed of the sample doesn't change

Honestly why i really like fl’s piano roll.

And edison, ill put it into edison check for the key using that and then put it in key

or just check the pitch of the sample with a plugin and then youll know what notes to use, if the melodic sample is unknown too, then yes you have to do by ear, but if you make your own melodies, just knowing which note is the 808 should solve all your problems

this is why i used a sine wave instead

This made my mind blown!! Even tho i use a spectral analyser to find notes but this should definitely be pointed out

I guess this might have happened in the popular trap song Hislerim, though i have no clue how the artist didn't recognize it being offkey

Gotta do both imo but it helps to grab the midi of the sample as well

Fl Studio has a stretch mode that doesn’t change length of your sample so FL gang keep doing this. It works
