Those of us who like the first series of Blackadder are in a minority. Yes, it’s a little esoteric at times with its historical references and its pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue, and the characters are poorly developed and defined, especially Edmund himself, but it has something the other series’ did not.

With so much of it shot on location at great expense, and a huge cast, it felt truly special at the time, and despite taking a few liberties with historical truth, captures the feeling of the age rather well, in a way that most historical sitcoms cannot compete with.

When Ben Elton was brought in to co-write from the start of series 2, and the whole thing pared back to little more than two cameras, two or three sets, and merely a handful of actors, it did at least demonstrate that comedy does not need a big budget.

The funny lines now came thick and fast, almost every one a gag or a setup for one, and reliance on the audience understanding the history to get the joke was kept to a minimum. It could be said that it had become very broad, like so many other sitcoms.

So for many that liked the first Blackadder for being an alternative to that kind of thing, it was a bit of a backward step. For the majority though, the series had found its feet. To the writers’ credit, the characters had been tuned to perfection, so one could better focus on the situation of each episode, which were always well conceived and scripted.

With hindsight, I enjoy every series of Blackadder very much, albeit this first series in a slightly different way to everything that followed.

It’s a shame the BBC would crucify you for putting your reactions on Youtube, but I’m glad you are letting us see them at all. I will enjoy accompanying you on this journey.

Ah man. Did you see the END after the titles? The three witches realise they’ve made a mistake and given the portent to the wrong person, so Blackadder thinks HE is the one that will be a future king, but the message was actually meant for Henry Tudor 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 (The whole setup based on the witches in Macbeth) That actually gives a massive clue as to how the series goes.

The amount of times I've seen that episode and only just noticed that one of the witches at the end is Gretchen Franklin (Ethel in EastEnders)!

Blackadder series 1 is criminally underrated!

I'm so glad you've fallen in love with Blackadder like all the rest of us have. :-)

Season one is the warm up. The rest is the honed, well tuned blackadder👍

I THINK you missed a post credit scene where the witches say "I imagined Henry Tudor would be taller" 😂.

Also, not sure if you recognized King Richard IV as Vultan from Flash Gordon.

Why do so many people insist on spoiling the ending of Series 4??? Even giving people a heads-up for what emotions they will be feeling is a spoiler, let alone telling them the specific story. Those scenes are much more impactful if they (a) aren’t hyped up, and (b) take you by surprise.

None of us expected to feel what we felt at the end of Blackadder 4, and that’s the way it should be. I also personally enjoy watching reactors more when they don’t know what to expect in advance - I’m watching their reaction to discovering something for the first time.

To me, the GREATEST sitcom ever made, bar none. The writing and the cast are exceptional. Some people don't like the different tone of season one, but it's really all good.

Alan - the first series sets the premise in a way. Some like it, many do not.
However, Blackadder finds its feet in series 2, runs in series 3, and is firmly cruising in Series 4.
All I will say, without spoiling it, is get the tissues ready for the final scene of the final episode.
Stick with it!

Thanks, season one is rarely shown I`d forgotten how good it is.
I really enjoy Peter Cooks `Fakespearean` iambic.
The other seasons are studio based to get costs down and
they hired Ben Elton to write jokes. They have a different tone
entirely but still very funny. Love the saga hope you do too.

I hope to see more of this, loving the reactions of the older comedies.

00:21 Blackadder is probably the epitome of 'early instalment weirdness'. All the most notable aspects of the series don't really crop up until the second series.
06:46 Would the GIs have had such motivation if Bradley gave a speech like that?
34:09 For future reference every episode of the first series has a post-credit scene and every episode of the second series has a madlib-style closing theme.

Blackadder sometimes have cut scenes at the end like this episode when the witches realise it wasn't Henry Tudor they were talking to.

The next 3 series' are even better than the first. Make sure you listen to the theme song at the end of each episode as the lyrics change...😁

Am so happy to see you react to this show. Season1 is finding its feet and it only gets better season to season. S4 still resonates with me today many decades later. You don't expect that from a comedy but it just hits.

Have you now watched the post credits punchline? 5 out of 6 episodes in this series have one, so you must watch right to the end.

You broke the golden rule with British comedy. Always watch the end credits! You missed the whole song, its different every time and the end gag.
