Watch stuff and learn and chill hi whatsup ⚔️👋🧐

Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Watching it on its original broadcast after 6 weeks of absolute hilarity was devastating. No one saw it coming but it was such a fitting show of respect.

The last shot is cut short. It fades to a black and white image of a poppy field that then becomes colourised with just birdsong over the top. No credits were put up, just the BBC production date. A comedy of that calibre that allows for a moment of intense seriousness and solemn silence.

Can't watch this without shedding a tear or several. This is often cited as the greatest ending to a TV show.

A friend was (and still is!) married to a senior member of the production team. Her father, a former serviceman, was absolutely furious that this moment was to be a subject of comedy. So they gave him a pre-broadcast copy and left him alone to watch it. Came back in to find him sitting, staring at the television, tears rolling down his face. Got his blessing.

When you’ve watched all four series, all ram-packed with hilarity, this last scene came as a huge heartstopper. Poignant indeed with many a nationwide tear.

The British are not given to overt displays of emotion, especially back then; but sometimes, like in this scene, the suppression of those emotions charges the atmosphere even more. A family friend of ours read a letter that was written by his uncle, a British officer, from the Somme to his family, two days before he was killed. It seems he knew very well what was coming, but had passed up an opportunity of an office job to stay with his men. The note was fairly short but the standout lines were “we don’t want to die, ” “we are calm, ” and “morale is good.” It seems that even in the face of death, he was more concerned about his family’s feelings than his own.

This scene still brings a tear to my eye.

When you have watched all 4 series you genuinely care for the characters, it’s like losing a friend.

One thing that I think is important about this scene is that it does show a great deal about why Captain Darling is how he is. While both he and Blackadder were in the army during the Second Boer War (Darling has the Queen's South Africa Medal, and Blackadder has that and the King's South Africa Medal), Darling had a civillian life and career, and he desperately wants to go back to it.

Full credit to Tim McInnery with his portrayl of Capt Darling in this scene - a few short lines to turn what was probably the most disliked character in the whole series, into one that audiences can't help but to sympathise with. 😥

Also watch his face in the background when Blackadder and Baldrick are having their last conversation. You can see him hoping Blackadder has something to get them out of there, then it falls to brief despair as Baldrick is told his plan will have to wait, before taking on a look of resignation as he begins to accept his fate.

Watching this on the first of July when my grandfather went over the top at the Somme brings tears to my eyes. God bless every Ulsterman that gave his life,

This is one clip of Blackadder 4 that really needs the full episode to be watched for context.

It is actually a rescue by the editing team as the actual footage was unusable due to mistimed effects and the cast stumbling, the result was one of the best bits of the series.

Many a Brit has shed more than a single tear for this moment and skipped more than a heartbeat for the poppy fields that was cut from this clip (right at the end).
We loved these characters, and I mean loved. It's like if the most beloved TV sitcom in the USA had ended with a 911 tribute and all the characters were in those buildings. I mean characters you loved deeply. I feel like Friends wouldn't even cut it - the emotional ties.

The last moment is short. Imagine the sitcom Friends ending in 9/11. This is what this sitcom was for the UK. The last scene, of a field of poppies in modern day Europe, was and is deeply moving for most Brits.

That was, the final episode of all four series. There were a couple of "one off" Black Adder's over the next few years though.

Dude. Tony Robinson (Baldrick) hosted a show called Time Team where archaeologists do digs in Britain to investigate ancient places. Anything from neolithic, bronze age, Roman, all the way up to WW2. I know how you love history and it's incredibly fascinating. Each episode lasts about 45 minutes. Tony got a knighthood for his services to archaeology so he's now Sir Tony Robinson. You would love it. ♥️✌️🇬🇧

Not many comedy shows can bring you to the verge of tears, this scene certainly did, and then some.

I cried buckets when I first saw this - and this didn’t even had the full scenes with falling poppies and the poppy fields included in it.

So, so powerful. Still moves me to tears 33 years later.

The final scene and closing credits (cut short here) are the finest on TV ever.

One of the most moving, thought-provoking pieces of television ever made. In one of the funniest comedies of all time. Figure that one out. Legendary.
