10 Amusement Park Disasters and Accidents

Number 10: The Mindbender – Canada
Back in the 80’s the Mindbender was the scene of a terrifying accident for its passengers. An ordinary ride on this rollercoaster turned into a tragedy when the fourth car on one of the trains derailed and slid backward, losing control and eventually ending up hitting a concrete pillar. The impact caused 4 passengers to fall from a height of about 7 meters. 3 passengers died and the fourth had to be treated for a severe injury.

Number 9: The Disco Dancer – India
At this amusement park, 20 employees decided to test out this new ride. Unfortunately for them, this isn’t one of the smart rides. The speed and spinning movement is one indicator of how chaotic the moment became when the spinning wheel of the ride, which is where the riders stand, came crashing down. 7 employees were injured and 1 died.

Number 8: Mission Space – USA
A four year old boy, who was quite tall for his age, passed the height requirements for this ride but it seemed that it was little too much for him. He passed out on the ride and had to be taken to hospital where he later died. A year after he passed, a middle aged woman died after having an experience that can only be described as intense. Many other people have ended up in the ER after experiencing nausea, dizziness and chest pains after their deep dive into space.

Number 7: Haunted Castle at Six Flags Great Adventure
On the evening of May 11th 1984, a fire started in the Haunted Castle at Six Flags Great Adventure. The fire was fanned by the AC while 29 people were inside. A group of 8 teens died while one of their friends made it out alive.

Number 6: Slingshot at Luna Park – France
In Luna Park, in the southern part of France, a 24 year old woman broke her leg inside the ride. One of the ropes had snapped, causing the cage to fly around, out of control, and eventually bump into a column. The woman and her companion waited up to an hour before the firefighters arrived on the scene and helped them down.

Number 5: Top Spin – Pakistan
In 2018 a group of riders fell from a height of 12 meters due to a ride malfunction. Many visitors are seen trying to help the victims. Unfortunately 18 people were injured and 1 school girl died.

Number 4: 20 Meters High Drop – USA
At the 6 Flags Texas Park in Arlington, a woman fell more than 20 meters down to her death. The 52 year old woman was not properly strapped in and slipped out the ride while her children watched. She slipped out during the rides first decent. The visitors say that the lady did express concern prior to the beginning of the ride. Everyone’s belt clicked three times and hers had only clicked once and she felt like she was not properly secured as the rollercoaster was about to take off. A woman in the line witnessed the accident as she asked if it was okay and the staff said yes.

Number 3: Pendulum – Iraq
You know what they say about looking both ways before crossing the street? Yeah, this might apply here. In 2015 a spectator walked in front of a moving pendulum like ride trying to get to the other side. The ride, ever increasing in strength and speed knocked him off the platform as he flew 6 meters. Luckily he managed to escape with only a concussion, bruised ribs and a broken leg. Although this doesn’t sound much like good luck, he was lucky to survive. Whether he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, now he knows to wait his turn.

Number 2: Wave Swinger – Spain
The wave swinger is one of the most popular carnival rides ever. Known and loved by all, this ride is quite enjoyable…that is if everything is in working order. The chains have to be properly attached and must be able to carry a lot of weight. In 2007 a woman, in Spain, fell off a wave swinger. She suffered a concussion and two broken legs from this unfortunate accident. The chains that were holding her up snapped and she was thrown from the ride with the impact breaking her legs. The accident was blamed on maintenance of the park.

Number 1: Top Spin – China
The thing about amusement park rides is that you will never know if you’re the next one to get injured. Many people go in and come out okay. We all get on the rides with a smile, unknowing of what the future may hold. In this video people are seen enjoying the ride then suddenly a girl is seen flying out of her seat. The poor girl was on a seat with a faulty seatbelt. The investigation conducted showed that there was a lack of backup safety functions to keep riders from fully detaching themselves from a ride in the case of a malfunction. With a ride as powerful as the topspin more safety measures are needed. Equipping the ride with only a strap might not be enough to keep this from happening again.

The similarities between all clickbait amusement park videos

1: They always use a thumbnail that shows someone flying out of a ride using photo editing and it always looks so unbelievably fake

Roller Coasters are extremely safe. All of these accidents were due to Human Error. Roller Coasters are designed to be extremely safe. It's one of the safest ways to have fun.

5:02 I just rode the world tallest slingshot. It launches you at 100 mph and it goes 450 feet high. It was amazing lol. Also the ride is not dangerous but parks have to replace the wires on the ride occasionally or the wires will snap. When this happens, parks learn their lesson and replace it more often. That was the case with the slingshot at Luna park

-The Mindbender accident occurred due to poor translation from German to English.
-Disk'o Dancer was designed and constructed by a non-reliable Asian company (need I say more).
-The accidents that occurred on Mission Space were most likely caused by pre-existing conditions.
-The fire at SFGADV was an Arson Attack.
-A Gravity Works Slingshot is much more dangerous than a Funtime one due to the fact that the Gravity Works model uses elastics while a Funtime one uses steel cables.
-Once again, another poorly designed ride made in Asia.
-Finally, an attraction that makes sense to be on here. The accident on New Texas Giant was a terrible accident that never should have happened. Hence why no one has bought a train from Gerstlauer again for an RMC.
-The Wave Swinger accident was most likely due to either poor maintenance or a poor quality ride in general.
-STOP WITH THE CHINESE KNOCKOFF RIDES!!! Top Spin was another knockoff most likely from China's illegal ride manufacturing industry!

After many years the Mindbender at West Edmonton Mall has been retired. It had it rough start but later was an enjoyable ride.

I actually rode the Mindbender in 2006. At the time, I wondered why it had just two cars, but did not question it. I found out literally 17 some years later, through this vid.
I heard they have a backwards version. Not sure though, just heard they did.
In either case, hearing about that earlier accident was so sad.

Just FYI- As far a the Mission Space ride (In EPCOT) goes, they have a 'tamer' version that you can request; but just use common sense- if you are claustrophobic, don't ride it!

Wow! Those were crazy! That last one! And the girl on the swings! When I’ve rode that kind of ride before, the swings, my fear is just what happened to her! That I’d just swing right off of there. I guess you just hope it’s not your turn.
