On my 2nd visit to my LCS I asked to verify a silver eagle, they tested it no charge, weighed it, and gave their opinions on the appearance vs a same date they had.

I asked to check a few junk silver a week later.

I at least buy a coin on my visits, but im surprised some would charge $20 just to use it. Maybe if it was 100oz worth of coins that would tie them up for 15mins i understand.

Try telling a real 90% fake Morgan that weighs as much as an authentic one. This is where die markers on the authentic coin become important. Luckily seen only one in five years.

Just don't buy unknown silver - that's what it comes down to - for known silver make sure that the weight first of all and then the dimensions match the known properties of known examples of that item - otherwise use the magnet slide test
