The Finals Run That Killed Daniil Medvedev (Australian Open 2024)

Honestly I think the 2022 final against Nadal was far more detrimental to his career. He could’ve won 2 consecutive slams and been a clear #1. That loss killed his momentum and sent him into a tailspin for the rest of that year. And even though he recovered nicely, Alcaraz and Sinner had risen to their current heights in the meantime. Winning the AO in 2022 might have kept his confidence in a place where he could stave those guys off a little longer. It’s unlikely he’ll win another slam at this point.

Seeing everyone pick up at least one set vs Medvedev except for FAA was kinda sad. His downfall has been incredible.
Also Medvedev's point at 2:44 is INSANE.

Finally someone covered this, that final against Sinner didn't feel like a choke at all, in fact, Sinner had already showed signs of recovery when he broke Daniil's serve at the end of the 2nd set, whereas Meddy's fatigue had also kicked in.
The 2022 final, on the other hand, that was the true heartbreaker, I remember turning the TV off after Nadal won the 4th set, pluis it's hard to stay awake when you wake up at 5 am to watch an AO match lol), that match singlehandedly changed Daniil for the rest of his career.

Delightful edit. Condensed scenes that I enjoyed remembering; in their proper tragic canvas.

Marat Safin, Australian Open 2004: 1 three-setter (lost final to Federer), 3 four-setters, 3 five-setters (T. Martin, Roddick, Agassi)
Daniil Medvedev, Australian Open 2024: 1 three-setter, 2 four-setters, 4 five-setters (Ruusuvuori, Hurkacz, A. Zverev, lost final to Sinner)

Looking forward to Australian Open 2044.

Thank you so much for this, finally a proper fan tribute for Daniil.

Unfortunately tennis is the most heartless, cruel sport in the world, and Meddy coming so close to getting justice for 2022 and reliving the same outcome again was a sporting tragedy. There is no justice it seems in this world. But it won’t always be that way for believers in Christ. God bless, Jake

Loved the music choice!
Ultimately his fault he didn't close os his matches sooner but I definitely think Medvedev wins the final if he had more rest because the level he showed in the first 2 sets vs Sinner was so high. Coulda, woulda, shoulda though.

I believe medvedev will win one more. The thing is, his game was so dominant for a pretty long time, but now he needs to change things up. After he does that I willing to believe that there will be another chance and maybe that one might be australian.

The balls gave gotten slower too guys. Huge impact on Meddy who doesn't generate a lot of pace on his own

this run heavily challaneged my mental stability as meddy stan
ofc its worse now but probably ao 22 was the turning point and he couldve redeemed it at 24 but not to be :(

The tragedy of the final was that his tiredness forced him to execute an ultra aggressive strategy which might have won him the match… if he hadn’t been so tired. Like a catch-22 situation. He should play that way every time against Sinner though, nuking his forehand and taking risks, not settling in for rallies
