President Javier Milei wants to push through reforms of the Argentinian economy | DW News

Argentina's president has given his first policy speech to Congress. Javier Milei announced a wide range of reforms.

In his fiery speech he said he would try to push through policies with or without lawmaker's support. "We won't back down, we're going to keep pushing forward," he said, adding: "Whether that's by law, presidential decree or by modifying regulations."

The right-wing populist took power last November, promising to shake up Argentina's embattled economy. But he's facing strong opposition in the parliament - and on the streets.

Unions called for protests ahead of Milei's speech - saying they fear his plans will leave the country worse off.

I live in Argentina, and hes the best thing that happened here in a long time. The left here, is utterly corrupt.

The report from Argentina was totally inaccurate. The journalist made President Milei appear to have issued threats against the opposition and he did quite the opposite. He built a bridge of understanding between different political parties and offered an invitation to sign a treaty with all the governors and other members of the political establishment to work together towards reforms that will benefit the people. I hope somebody turns Milei’s speech into English with AI (as the Davos’ speech) so that random reporters don’t create unwarranted misunderstandings as is the case here.

Right wing populist? Cutting government spending, telling people that things will get worse before they get better and telling people that want to live from subsidies that they should go to work... all these things are not exactly "populist" in my books. Also, lets not forget this guy is an economist with expertise in economic growth.... if someone can take Argentina out of the crisis is this guy.

0:12 translation, if DW says “right wing populist” it means “orthodox economics leader”
DW forbids the use of “classical liberalism”, “libertarianism”, “free markets” 🤠

It is what all European countries need.
Not healthcare cuts, Not MIlitary cuts, corruption cuts.
Because in no other place democracies have such overbloated government spending.

DW why you sound so gloomy about what's happening in Argentina? And your correspondent there sound quite low level as journalist. Not a reliable source. Better concentrate on the mess Germany is today: unreliable transport system, farmers left out, bureaucracy booming, a bank system unable to provide a digital fast service, lagging in tech innovation, salaries unable to sustain basic do not try to export your decadent system to the world and above all, not to Argentina, country that is fighting hard to stay away of the countries that made the most damage to you nation such as russia. Shame on you DW.
