Argentina: Milei wants to reverse rapprochement with China | DW News

When he was still campaigning, Argentina's new president Javier Milei threatened to cut ties with Beijing, favoring trade with the US and Europe. But after 23 years of negotiations, a European free-trade deal still seems to be a long way off. That leaves none other than China as an increasingly important trading partner for Argentina - something that is softening the hard anti-Beijing stance of the country's new president.

Milei finding that actual governing is a lot more difficult than spewing nonsensical campaign slogans

Decades ago, when China began its economic reforms and opened its doors, Western products flooded into China like a tide. However, the Chinese people did not complain. Instead, they worked hard and humbly learned, which is the right way to go. Now, some Western countries that are failing blame their misfortunes on China, which is a sign of weakness, especially in the case of the United States. The once confident America has now turned into a resentful and insecure nation.

Milei is an extremely entertaining person, unless you are an Argentinian.

Politicians should realise, in this era it is hard to completely decouple from any country, let alone China. They should be better policymakers, if you feel you are being robbed off or being treated unfairly, create better policies that benefits your country.

Milei "we are anti-communists. But we rely on Communists money, investment, market and technology. " 😂

It is difficult for China to maintain long-term cooperation with such a capricious government. This is a shortcoming of the Western democratic system. Politicians lie for votes, irresponsible, and run away when they make enough.

China can do without Argentina, the question is can Argentina do without China. The U.S won't build any infrastructure for Argentina.

Making deals with China is a winner on both sides. Something everyone does not want to admit but do make the deals.

look around the world, he suddenly find out China is the only country willing to help with a lowest cost. But I dont know China is still willing to help since as Milei's plan, Argentina money will become worthless soon enough.

I'm from Argentina. So far in less than three weeks Milei has: devalued our currency by 50% in a single day, made protests illegal (you have to ask permission to the government or face jail), destroyed pensioners, tried to pass a draconian executive order, tried removing the law forbidding foreign capitals from buying massive amounts of land, is trying to sell all state owned enterprises (even the ones that give a lot of revenue to the state such as the Vaca Muerta gas fields), want to sell most natural resources to foreign bidders. He's going to finally kill this country.

Never talk tough to the person who helps you when you are in difficult times. If you want to align with US, that is fine. But why would you talk tough to China? China is here to help and yes it wants to trade too. But fundamentally China is a power that could continue helping you and hopefully continue trading with you. That is a good relationship. You really don't need to burn the bridge simply because you want to pledge allegiance to USA. It shows character.

Calling China "communist" speaks volumes about Milei's qualifications in economics.

The question should be, can Argentina get a better deal from the US by cutting off China? And Brazil? These are Argentina's biggest trading partners based on the latest available China(5.93B), US(4.55B), India(4.19B) and Chile (3, 93B) . But the numbers alone belied a very important fact. Trade with China is growing exponentially. It is getting favorable trade concessions and most important of all, China set no condition for trading unlike the US whose main intention is to get rid of China.

I hope the Chinese do not allow Argentina to return to BRICS, and remember how enthusiastically the Argentinians voted for him and his anti-China policies.

I am Indonesian, my current president once said "if you want to be a developed country, East Asia can be an example and never follow the way used by South American countries" now I realize which country he is referring to.
I mean this guy is fawning on America and the west to get them to invest heavily in Argentina with the current geopolitical and geoeconomic conditions? Did he forget America is a rich country by opening up the stock market? I mean American government itself is not even capable of helping homeless, drug addicted, mass shootings, shoplifting.. because yes the one who runs the country is not its government, but the rich oligarchs who don't care about it. I'm not even sure of his title as an economist if that's the basic thing he doesn't know.

Let this be clear. China is not telling any one to be communist.
