I think the same kind (though different degree) of thing happened post- Gutenberg when story tellers became authors and no longer tailored their stories to the individual or small groups, but to nations and the world. The complexity was lost for a more universal story. But perhaps with mediums like YouTube and fanfiction we can bring back that complexity as the story can be told by countless people in countless ways.

The "wall" being massive between story telling and someone getting over the protagonist being "white" is revealed in the fact that there is a psuedo-Hispanic/African American child of indistinguishable ethnic origin as the model on Batman costumes in stores for Halloween. What happened to just the white kid that sort of looks like Bruce Wayne? It can't be that simple anymore.
