Moving from Maya to Blender - A Modellers Guide

In this video, I'm going to be exploring Blender and discovering the tools I use the most in Autodesk Maya. The main tools I use day-to-day in Maya have to be the Multi-cut tool, Extrude, Bevel and circularise tools. If I can learn these then I should be on track, so these are going to be my main focus in today's video.

A tip in Blender. Instead of using extrude and right klick to cancel the extrusion and then scale, you can use "extrude inner" (press 'I'), it does all those steps it directly.

Couple of notes for blender.
1. Bevel is both a modifier and an operation in edit mode. Which one you use depends on whether you want it to be editable after the fact.
The loop cut tool can do multiple even cuts at once you can use the mouse wheel or the keyboard to specify the number of cuts.
3. Extrude individual can be done with the alt + E keyboard shortcut.
4. Extrude region can be done with the E keyboard shortcut.
5. The whole extrude zero then scale can be done more efficiently with the inset operator activate with the I key and use the I key again to toggle between group and individual inset modes.
6. You can add a subdivision surface quickly (or change the number of subdivisions) using the ctrl + 1-5 keyboard shortcuts.

I've been using Maya for modeling for years. I started learning blender last week. I noticed that the process done in 3 moves with Maya is done in 6 moves with blender. This video proves it. Blender definitely needed to be more practical to attract Maya users. In Blender, interconnected tools and variables are positioned in very different parts of the screen. So they made the modeling slower by almost half. Blender's only and most important thing is that it's free. (However, not everyone who uses Maya pays license fees)

That was pretty good man.
But there are some shortcuts that you could've used in blender.
For example:-
You don't have to go to modeling workspace to edit mesh.. You can just press tab.
You don't have to extrude then cancel the extrusion then scale to inset. You can simply press (I)
Ctrl + (1, 2or3) to add a subdivision surface modifier quickly.
If you didn't apply the bevel it would have been already transferred to the top part.
You can set the limit method in the bevel modifier to angle so that it doesn't bevel every edge.

Cool, I'm trying to switch to blender for personal work since my Maya educational version ran out

I hope you will not stop making tutorials for Maya. I am actually going from Blender to Maya and your channel is just goldmine for excellent tutorials! Thank you!

Maya pros:
+used as main modeling and animation tool in most US based studios = easy to find job
+has powerful animation tools like editable motion trails, onion skinning, easy to use graph editor etc
+has powerful UV editing possibilities
+flexible = wide range of avalible scripts written in mel or python
+lots of plugins are avalible
+fast viewport

Maya cons:
-slow and bloated = you wait half a minute until it shows you the UI and then you wait sometime for the UI to be responsive
-low quality software = lots of bugs and crashes
-somewhat outdated node-based architecture
-slow tool-based workflow
-slow and destructive modeling workflow
-slow rigging and weightpainting workflow (without addons like ngskintools it's just suck)

Blender pros:
+fast and lightweight = loads in seconds
+the only all in one solution that can cover whole pipeline
+higher quality code base = less chances to crash or have a bug (versions after 2.79 are less stable because of big development jump)
+has flexible and clean UI
+fast and reliable mode-based workflow
+fast and powerful non-destructive modifier based modeling workflow
+easer to use rigging and skinning tools
+flexible = wide range of avalible addons written in python
+PBR-based viewport that gives you closest WYSIWYG results
+open-source code base = you can edit blender and add your own features
+free

Blender cons:
-in the industry used more as a tool in the toolbelt
-the all in one solution that is best for generalists and hobbyists = lacks more specific tools indie developers
rarely need
-has less compatibility with other industry standard software
-has one of the slowest viewport when it comes to animation
-has not reliable undo system (tbh I had problems with undo in Maya too, when blender at least try to undo, maya sometimes just forget everything all of a sudden)

As someone going to college for Game Art, we use maya, but since it is a student license, I won't have it after I graduate so I am trying to learn how to use blender on the side to get a grasp on how different the process of modeling is.

The best video on this channel. Thank you so much. I'm not going to completely abandon maya, but this was quite helpful.

Cool video. You can make circles without the addon. shit+alt+s when you have the square selected will scale it round.

2:50 to avoid this step you only need to scale in edit mode instead of object mode

Its interesting how autodesk removed the main thing keeping pro artists using maya in their spare time. I can see this trickling the industry away from maya slowly over the years, because at this rate most industry artist will be able to use blender interchangeably, simply because nobody wants to spend 1k on a 1 year subscription just so they can model in their spare time and the old student versions were godsent...

to Extrude (inset) individual face in Blender double press "i" to change it's inset mode. It's like keep faces together in Maya on/off, but just before the operation. Shortcut for changing individual origins is "." and appears marking menu on keayboard.

This is great for people who might use maya at work but can’t justify the cost for personal projects or home use. I see you didn’t go with the industry compatible keymap, what were your thoughts on that?

What a great video. Nice to see the equivalent techniques compared like this. Cheers.

You can use C to 'brush/paint' select in Blender.

I am transitioning from Maya to Blender, this video is great and super useful Thanks you so much Josh

7:28 you can just insert faces pressing "i" so you dont need to extrude them and press esc

so getting to make something in blender without getting jabbed by maya controls stuck in my head every 2 seconds only took 9:18 min of watch time and 330 days to find this gem
