3D Scan to 3D Print - Tradeoffs of 3 Approaches

So you finally got a 3D Scanner. Now what? Most people want to be able to 3D print something. I use my Revopoint POP2 and Prusa 3D Printer to Reverse Engineer things and to make new parts. A lot of the time, the part I'm scanning is defective. I just can't print the Scan. I show three different approaches that I use to go from 3D Scan to 3D Print.

Here are some of the things I used:

Would love to see you build this out start to finish. Thanks for sharing.

Obviously this is not meant to be a tutorial. Someone new to the entire process such as myself cannot follow any of what went into the scanning, editing or printing processes.

Interesting video I've used scan data for many years (automotive) and just bought a scanner for personal projects. What you've shown is a really good guide I would personally only use the first 2 for quick and dirty projects the third method would always be my first preference. On the software and skills side unfortunately for the hobbyist I one click tool doesn't really exsist and I suspect the more hobby based tools can be hard to work with. If you posted the models I might have a go in Catia or NX if I get the chance.

in my experience, you could have minimized the support material by printing it edge on...

Great video why simply measure it and build it in a 3d modelling software like free CAD, its way quicker no scanner needed just use your phone and place images in the x y z cad software . Love the content and devotion ;-)

Interesting. Thanks. Would like to have seen the print installed for its intended use. Also, why didn't you print it in black?

A forth step being that you can simply recreate the hinge around the 3d scanned hinge to give you better control over want you want and shouldn't take much time as you do not need to be modifying the original?

Very interesting. Is a 3D print going to be strong enough?

How do you maintain strength of 3d printed piece compared to metal model, special filament???

Cool but wouldn't the replacement need to be metal?🤔

Thanks for sharing this video, new to scanning and didn’t really know where to start so it’s really helpful….

What is the white featured outer disc on the turntable ? Just something with unique features to keep good tracking ?

Very interesting. Could you make a mold with the 3d print and cast it with some metal?

Did it work with the shutter? Was the 3D printed part strong enough? Resistant to the weather?

Thanks for the video. Is the turntable "feature" extension disk your work? Available as a download or commercial accessory?
