I do alot of beat matching, key matching and wordplay (phrase matching). Most of my music is set with atleast 3-4 hot cues on each track. Really helps!!! Great tip.👌

This 💯 %
Once I learned about phrase matching it took my performance from amateurish to professional overnight

Funny thing, before we had CDJs and Recordbox, I was a DJ on the nineties. I wild create mixes on preparation for a show, I had some pretty basic software that I could place a certain element, a reverse clap at the point where I would now set memory cues. On the way to my gig I would listen to that mix and remember where that cue point was. I was mixing vinyl at the time, and it usually was at the drop, but not always. We had to remember these cues by memory.

I cannot imagine having to do math and prep for every transition. Just practice your music and the phrase matching will come instinctively

Great advice, I’ll take technique this for recording sets to upload afterwards or when I got to play an specific style of music in someplace. I always try to improvise when I’m djing so I can get fast and creative when I need to bring up or down the energy for the crowd. Preparing tracks before DJing doesn’t always mean that it’ll fit perfectly to the dance floor or for what people needs to listen in that specific moment.

I always put a marker where I want the tracks to start so I can start the mix any time before that. I also save a loop of 1 or 2 bars in case I need some time to mix the next song.

I did that and started to include the beat jump feature when I knew I was too early or too late to add said segment to a song, it helps a lot on big jumps or just small corrections of timing.

Also learned that tracks don’t necessarily need to flow perfectly or match. The only goal it’s to keep people dancing .

So glad I learned on records with no bpm counters and don't need all that a trained ear is a must have to be a DJ

Phil you need to make a pt. 2 integrating beat jump to align late/early needle drops… if you ever miss a drop swap or something because of forgetting to raise fader or playing at the wrong time, I align my beats using beat jump then mix it in 8 bars after I meant to drop it… ends up just sounding like a bass line switch but still allows you to keep the phrasing in time

I use a 4 count for techno. Some times i fit the kicks in with my head first by tapping or bopping my head to the temp

Love to see a lot of DJs on vinyl because these days it is a piece of piss. On vinyl u need to know your tunes but also looking for the breaks in a track by looking at the vinyl

When i had my records i would count the bars at the begining of the record to the 1st breakdown. And i would count the bars at the end from the last drop. I put stickers on each record with track name and bars. There was 1 mix i could do were the mix started at the final breakdown and when the mix ended the second song hit its breakdown as a wooosh noise.

Been 15 years since i have played on dex. Wouldn't mind learning CDJ's but don't have the time or money to do so at the moment 😞

Mistake? I think the word you're looking for is coincidence.

It's called beat jumping. Easy to do on the fly. 4, 8, 16, 32

I never thought that the speed of the song and BPM were supposed to match!

I always do that in my mind with my vinyl on my technic turntables like a real dj without looking at some fancy screens
