Garlic is definitely a cool-weather plant, originally from the Northern Middle East (Iran, Central Asia), that needs a certain chilling period early in its life cycle to set a bulb. garlic was the one thing I didn't bother trying to grow (I'm at 14 degrees south latitude, off grid on 25 acres of rainforest, it doesn't get more tropical) I didn't know you could put the bulbs in the fridge to get them ready to sprout! this changes everything. My three favorite aromatics are onion, chilli and garlic. I grow my own onion and chilli. going to put some cloves of garlic in the fridge today.

I live in fl and have noticed alot of Bodegas and Asian groceries tend to keep their garlic refrigerated. I tend to buy from there for growing as they already did the fridge work.

I live in California and our grocery store California grown garlic likes to germinate right on the counter top, even in hot temperatures. I think you could plant our cultivars directly in the summer with no problem.

I have watched your shows for a long time but I never subscribed. Today I am just because of this feature. I’m in the Caribbean and actually will apply this method and see what happens. So I will put my garlic in the fridge for 2 months and plant out in February hopefully, I will have garlic by June. Thanks for the info. Next do potatoes for the Caribbean 😀😀

While I'm not in a super warm climate, this video was still super helpful! I think the garlic I planted months ago might be ready for harvest now. Thank you :)

This is such a great idea if you missed your chance to plant garlic in the fall...at least for me I will try both ways to experiment...I planted my garlic cloves in September and I will try this method in January or February and again another great video so nice to always learn something each time I watch your videos..all the best from NY!

Your videos are very helpful! I am literally about to go put my garlic in soil now so timing to have found this couldn't have been any better!

I've had some store bought cloves in water for less than a week and the amount of roots is seriously impressive! Also the sprout (?), stock(?) LOL idk the terms but a few are nearly 3 inches already!!! I live in Phx and honestly didn't plan this but they started sprouting in my garlic container so I figured why not try it out since I am already potting up my other plants. They never saw the inside of the fridge but I was keeping them by my balcony door which gets opened a lot so I'm thinking they got enough "cold" that way?

Thanks again for your ever so helpful videos, I've totally been binge watching for a couple of hours now 🤣

I’ve heard from a few people experimenting with refrigerating for the verification period, but have found that the ones they put in the fridge compared to ones non refrigerated the fridge ones would be smaller than those that weren’t in the fridge from USA growers.
I’m in Australia but I usually grow soft necks with good results from store brought garlic, but this year I just harvested hard garlic from a store, as they all had scapes. Again they grew well, non fridges as they had began to shot hence buying them cheap.
Perhaps if I want to grow from this years harvest of Hard Neck Garlic, I will need to get them in the fridge to last me to plant them in our autumn about April as they don’t last as long in storage as the Soft Neck varieties.
Perhaps more studies needed, for this theory, I understand in cold climates you can plant them early before winter and they grow their roots in that time in the snow as long as they don’t freeze hence mulching, before the leaf starts growing in Spring, you can have it in the ground just after 3 months of harvest in snowy cold climates.😀
I will select some Hard Neck Garlics and fridge them before they are unusable for 2022

You’re so funny 🤣 Jeff, I love your little one he’s the cutest Prince 🤴🏻 Charming Ever ..!!! That’s so true, (warm) indoors the shoots are so much longer and grown over night larger every day, now I have to get some kind of mentor supporting the long leaves, they’re falling all directions, was wondering where do you get your straws from because I would really love to get some ASAP.
I hate seeing opened soil esp. Indoors.. kindly let me know where I can buy some please. I checked most of the hardware store in my area (Toronto) and everything “garden” is puts away cause of: WINTER 🥶 ❄️ Thanks for sharing 🙏🇨🇦
