Right, but what if the exponent on the left hand side is a quadratic expression while on the right it's a linear? How would I go about solving that? Do i use the quadratic formula on the left hand side?

This is actually a wrong way, never do something like this on exam, if ya got 3^x = 3^y always take the logarithm from both sides and you will get x = y, but do not directly say x = y, sometime they will give you 0 point for that, exactly what happened to me..
