Made these pickles 2 weeks ago. Broke into the first jar tonight. Oh wow. These are perfect. Exactly like my mother used to make years ago. Thanks.

The History of Bread & Butter Pickles. Around the turn of the century (1900) there was a cucumber farmer in Illinois who was trying to figure out what to do with the cucumbers that no one would buy because they were misshapened. His wife said why don't we make pickles out of them and pulled out her Mother's pickle recipe. They made a batch and took it to the local grocery store and traded the pickles for ... you guessed it ... Bread & Butter ... Hence the name. B&B pickles became the first American food rage. By the end of the 1920s if you did not have B&B pickles on your dinner table you did not have a well-set table. On a fun note, B&B pickles are one of the few true American pickles. Unlike most of our pickles, they never existed in Europe. I don't think there is a "wrong" recipe for B&B pickles. When I started making mine I asked my Mom for the recipe she always used when I was a kid. She sent me that recipe plus all of my Aunt's various recipes. I ended up having to put together a spreadsheet of ingredients and make my B&B pickles out of the most common ingredients PLUS, like Dave's Famous Pickles, I add red serrano peppers from my garden. (I think Dave uses red jalapenos.)

I tried a different recipe last year... they were good... but this looks great! Thanks so much I will give it a try. (Mom is going to kill me when I tell her we have to wait 24 hours LOL) We like to can things together, It keeps us inspired and it can make the process a little bit faster.

Hi Russ, that was a good idea to try and get some of those mustard seeds out. I do have a good recipe for marinara sauce, I will be posting it in the near future. I don't can it, as it is pretty easy to make, I guess you could can it. I may try canning some. Keep me posted on your pickles. Take care for now, The BEC.

Hi Gary, I am glad that you enjoyed the pickles, and they do get better the longer they set. If you take a photo of the pickles, and send the photo to me on my website, I will post the photo. Thanks! The BEC

Hi Cheeky, Waiting 24 hours is well worth the wait, these pickles will come out nice and crunchy, and they really taste great. It is nice that you and your mother can together, I am sure it is a great bonding time. After you make the pickles, send me a photo of them on my website. I am posting photos of food that viewers make on my website. Good luck, The BEC

Russ, You caught a huge mistake on my part, it should be 6 Tablespoons of mustard seed, it was a typo and has since been corrected, and I think you may be OK with the extra mustard seed in your pickles, and you may have stumbled onto a new recipe. Please let me know how your pickles turn out, and send a photo on my website for me to post. I am sorry for my stupid mistake and any stress this may of caused you. Good luck, The BEC

I thought it might be 6 instead of 15 so while it was cooking I tried to pull 9 tablespoons back out. We will see how it effects the pickles. Got any good recipes for canning (jarring) marinara sauce
