LOL from New Zealand.... we are not some freaky isolated place with no safe paths... luckily we do have some unspoilt wildlife and natural environments but we have all the stuff every other first world country has too... too many car, too much pollution, loss of wildlife from introduction of foreign species and habitat destruction. Still a great place to come and visit though!

While I love Tolkien, I feel like the continued association between New Zealand and Middle-earth cheapens Aotearoa. It is its own place, not some fantastic version of Europe.

Stunning NZ three part doco series for BBC Earth that was screened on TV1. Superb stories, images, sound track and narration by Sam Neill. Shown earlier by Nat Geo WILD with a different narrator. A great watch and NZ natural history at it's best. I missed the first episodes but the second featured the the deep south, Fiordland and the Southern Alps, filming the ancient birds, sea mammals and corals. Time lapse footage of shrinking glaciers that move up to seven metres a day. Also insects such as the stone weta that survives being frozen up to 80% and the very rare fist sized and worlds largest carnivorous Powelliphanta snail with 6, 000 teeth.
