The Wilhelm Gustloff is also known as the deadliest ship disaster in maritime history which happened around on January 30, 1945 and about 9, 000 people were killed during that disaster

I still don’t get how this sinking isn’t super famous, but the titanic is.

The part where the people are stuck inside the boat really made me uncomfortable. Shows the talent that went into this

The fact that there were 10, 000+ people there and only 1, 239 survived is horiffying…

1252 people survived the intial sinking, however 13 of these survivors died soon after

Let that sink into your head, 10, 500-600 souls on board and just little over 1200 survived, just unbelievable

Little known fact: 11 days later, the same submarine torpedoed the German ship Steuben, killing about 4, 500 people.

This makes me sad. If I remember correctly, the captain was told to keep the lights off. If he had listened, this situation may have had a different result.

This ship was phenomenal because only 2, 000 of the 9, 400 passengers survived.

This sent me down a Wikipedia rabbit hole. Helped fill a big gap in my WWII knowledge.
This was the first of three major disasters that resulted from Operation Hannibal, the frantic sea evacuation of Germans, mostly civilians, westward and away from the advancing Red Army.
Along with the Gustloff was the Steuben sinking with around 4, 000 killed and the Goya, around 7, 000. That's three ships sunk, about 20, 000 dead total. That they would brazenly risk a torpedo attack shows the level of desperation to avoid falling into the hands of the Soviets.

Such a tragic maritime disaster. It was an evacuee transport ship with thousands of children onboard and some of the captains saved themselves before many of their passengers.

the sad part is that the children died too and the way the sailors and captain trying to save the people that are still stuck there

At the beginning of the war on the Eastern Front, three ships with refugees, women and children, were sailing to Leningrad. A German submarine sank the first ship, the Germans waited until the second ship collected people from the water and sank it too. The captain of the third ship did not save people from the cold water, and left the dangerous place at full speed. He probably did everything right. So this is a war crime. And Wilhelm Gustloff was sailing with anti-aircraft guns on the deck, there were no markings - a legitimate military target
