Sinking of the MV Wilhelm Gustloff

MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German military transport ship which was sunk on 30 January 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea while evacuating civilian evacuees from East Prussia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia and German military personnel from Gotenhafen (Gdynia) as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate, 9,400 people died, making it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.

Originally constructed as a cruise ship for the Nazi Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude) organization in 1937, Wilhelm Gustloff had been requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine (German navy) in 1939. She served as a hospital ship in 1939 and 1940. She was then assigned as a floating barracks for naval personnel in Gotenhafen before being fitted with anti-aircraft guns and put into service to transport evacuees in 1945.

I wonder why the wreck of the MV Wilhelm Gustloff is so unrecognizable when it sank to such a shallow depth

Interesting to see. The Sinking sequence of the Gustloff has always been rather vague in description, very nice to see it animated.

This thing deserves more attention than the Titanic

I know this is not known to many, but it’s death toll in total is 9, 400

Titanic had plenty of time, but not enough lifeboats. Lusitania had plenty of lifeboats, but not enough time. Wilhelm Gustloff had neither enough time nor enough lifeboats.

I do have a theory that the ship either "slid" or "lowered" beneath the surface. The water was rather shallow for such a big ship. Considering eyewitness accounts stated that it went down "like an arrow" into the water. Its likely that the ship hit the sea floor as the stern rose into the air, and the ship either slid beneath the surface, or the stern simply lowered into the water.

This sequence is incorrect. According to eyewitnesses, the lights turned on and the stern rose out of the water before making its final plunge. Essentially, the ship rolled on its side, then it sunk bow first with the stern rising out of the water, before slipping below the surface like an arrow.
