When we want more control over where the sound goes from our digital mixer we use the matrix section. In this video, I'll show you 2 ways to use the matrix section of your mixer: to separate subs and tops and to set up delayed speakers.

i like to feed my LR mains from a matrix to offer me more eq and dynamics control. my signal path is something like this: channels into groups or LR, LR into matrix for main pa and zones. When I want to apply eq to the room (main pa or a zone) I use the eq on the matrix. when i want to adjust the eq of the mix, I use the eq LR bus. IF I am generating a mixing board feed to a recorder, I do it from the LR bus (with all the room equalization happening after the recording send) . I take a similar approach to compression and limiting. with the compressors on the matrix set, more like limiters, appropriately for each different speaker zone, and the LR compressor used more artistically on the mix. Which leads to another point about insert plugin effects (This is not something that applied to the QL, as it had ample effects slots, and even two insert points on each mix). some popular digital mixers have only 8 effect slots available for graphic eq, reverb/delay effects, and vintage dynamics/eq/ other processing) If I avoid a graphic eq on my main mix, I have a slot available to insert a vintage compressor on my mix. With a 6 band parametric eq on my LR bus and on my matrix bus, I have sufficient equalization available to me, without using a graphic eq on my mix.

Personally though...
I prefer to use an Aux send post fade, with only the channels (at 0 dB), that I want to send to the subs... going to that Sub Aux.
I'm only saying this because more and more frequently now, when walking up to a desk somebody has got a Left/Right and a Sub matrix thing going on... and they seem to always have the Sub Source as a copy of the Masters... Which really, really annoys me... I mean who on Earth wants all the waffle from everything i.e.; the top kit, Horn Sections, Choirs, effects and the main Vocal mic bleeding into the Sub Speakers.
I haven't scientifically analysed it, and it could just be from an expected psychoacoustic thing...
but I do think the Aux method just sounds more "how I want it to sound", as in more musically pleasing.
That said... I like your presentation style...
