▬ Information ▬
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself. The main contenders are Houses Targaryen, Hightower, Stark, Baratheon, Arryn and Velaryon.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Based on the fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. The series is set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, and interweaves several plot lines with a large ensemble cast. The first narrative arc follows a civil conflict among several noble houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the attempts to reclaim the throne by the exiled last scion of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty; the third chronicles the rising threat of the impending winter and the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North.

“Robert kinda forgot that he was meant to bring more than 5 people on a hunting party.”

this was probably the scene he was allowed to criticize

Honestly, of all the kings George wrote about, Robert is the MOST likely to piss off into the woods for a week with a few mates and find something to hunt.

He doesn’t strike me as someone who needs constant ceremony or pageantry and would like the relative calm that comes from just a few men on their own against nature, like real men proving their worth and that he’s still got it. It’s absolutely in character for Robert.

So the fact that George was always so aghast that they couldn’t give him a proper Royal hunting party always struck me as bizarre as it’s perfectly understandable with S1’s budget considerations as well as it just not being a change most people but the most ardent purists or historical literalists would care about.

With so many other scenes he could gripe about, that this one still annoys him years after the fact will never not puzzle me. 😂

This actually makes a lot of sense because of course we know that as the series went on he became less involved and I think it was the first two when he had the most influence. Season 1 in particular had a lower budget and some key scenes got cut such as the Battle of the Whispering Wood and this scene when Robert gets attacked by the boar. If we look at it from George's POV he specifically wrote it as a key event but the scene is very short and just a few dudes walking through forest and nothing happens lol. Had he been more involved later on this scene probably would've flew over his head

He said this while the series was still running.

He’s criticizing something that’s not really directed at someone in general just a situation. Criticisms of certain scenes/characters would be basically taking shots at D&D. Which as an old man I’m sure he’s not interested in participating in what would amount to, with media coverage, petty internet drama. In his blog where he says his book Euron is “really really really different” from the show I think reveals how he really feels

This man has the weirdest priorities

Forget about season 5-8, what about that line with Cersei having a child with Robert

Honestly, that scene did always seem kind of cheap looking.

He made this statement in 2011, so that was the worst scene at the time.

He said that almost a literal decade ago. Before the even season 4 or 5 maybe

Grrm was consulted in s1 then a bit for s2 then completely shut off from d&d after the smallest criticism he gave. He'd still write episodes as it was part of the deal but that was it.

I'm going to disagree with George here. King Robert is exactly the sort of king to ditch the royal guard and go hunting with a small guard.

_A smile touched Ned's lips. "I do believe you mean it."_
_"I do, I do, " the king said._ *"What do you say, Ned? Just you and me, two vagabond knights on the kingsroad, our swords at our sides* _and the gods know what in front of us, and maybe a farmer's daughter or a tavern wench to warm our beds tonight."_

Who is this George Guy? Has he even read AGOT?

Even Korean historical dramas almost always gets this right. A hunting party would be a combination of a Kings guard, the Princes guards and an army of soldiers.

He's right, at the time I thought it looked bizarre for the emperor of a continent to have such a cheap party.

The only reason grrm didnt shit on anything beyond season 4 was because he wasnt involved with it and he didnt wanna mess up his relationship with HBO. Its one thing to criticize a work that you were a part of; but criticizing the parts of GoT that he wasnt involved with would only have made things worse.

i reckon as soon as george realised the paths divergence of the shows he ignored anything after that split as his own close influence and therefore focused mostly on the earlier seasons which he felt were more his own creation

Once again, I find it funny that fans always project their own gripes onto George, acting like he would have massive problems with the story and writing etc... and then he proves that his concerns are far smaller and more niche or even superficial. Like his 3 big demands for House of the Dragon... obsessive fans probably thought they would be big important story points and guidelines for how to write well, etc... nope. Colourful dragons, shiny armour and a random mention of Jaehaerys II. lol

George just kinda forgot about the other seasons

That quote from GRRM was literally from the end of season 1 as it finishes airing. After that he started warning us all about butterfly effect of the show vs books. Then straight up left show after season 4 I doubt he saw any scripts or previews of episodes after that.
Also I that fire cant kill a dragon book

I think can be trusted as much as the historical accurcies of Fire and Blood

Every scene with Mark Addy as Bobby B was great.
