This is a pretty neat channel, I love the little pixel scenes. Have you considered doing one really comprehensive video every few weeks or so? I know you said you like for us to go and research for ourselves, but I'd gladly watch a 30 minute long in-depth explanation of something like the transition from the Roman to Byzantine empires.

Have you ever thought about doing the winter war between Finland and the Soviets or the sausage war in which the Russians attacked the Finnish but got distracted by the smell of the sausage soup in a nearby Finnish kitchen that has made enough food to feed 2000 men the smell was so powerful that the Russian soldiers ignored their officers and ignored the Finnish soldiers and attacked the kitchen this gave enough time for the Finns to regroup and counter attack and in which they slaughtered the Russians like cattle and won the day

As for maintaining defense of a large empire without the difficulties of trying to sustain a huge army, the Byzantine theme concept could have been a good enough solution (which rather ironically seems to have only been thought of after a huge loss in territory).

What caused the end of the Pax and the end of the (Western) Empire was Christianity. The Pax ended in 180 with as Emperor Commodus' concubine (and future conspirator in his assassination) was Christian, became one of his most trusted advisors during which time he/they dismantled the bureaucracy and military leadership, and then she killed him. The more Christian the Empire got, the weaker it got as it turned its back on science, technology, governance, and especially philosophy.
